Animal Crossing: New Horizons Wisp – Something new or something expensive explained
We're phans.
Wisp appears randomly at night in Animal Crossing: New Horizons and will task you with finding five pieces of Wisp’s spirit. Do so, and he’ll reward you with something new or something expensive. In this guide we’ll explain everything you need to know about this ghostly character.
Much like the seafaring Gulliver, Wisp will appear randomly on your island but you’ll only spot him at night. Talk to him and parts of his spirit will fly out of him and all over your island – he’s easily scared alright.
Find all five of Wisp’s spirit pieces and he’ll give you a choice between two different rewards: something new or expensive. What does this even mean?
In the sections below we’ll explain everything you need to know about Wisp, including where to find him, how to complete his task, and what rewards you’ll earn.
Wisp – Something new or something expensive explained
Without further ado, here’s the deal with Wisp.
Where can I find Wisp?
Wisp will randomly appear on your island at night, so you’ll need to roam around until you bump into him. It’s a pretty similar affair to Gulliver.
Wisp is likely to make his first appearance on your island within the first three days, so keep an eye out for him.
Speak to Wisp and he’ll lose five Wisp’s spirit which will be littered all over the island.
How do I collect Wisps’ Spirit?
To catch Wisp’s Spirit you’ll need to equip a Net and hike around your island. Wisp’s Spirit look like little ghostly flames which’ll hover in the air.
It’s simply a case of methodically exploring your island until you’ve caught all five in your net. You’ll know when you’ve done so because your character will inform you.

What are my rewards?
Speak to Wisp once you’ve collected all of his Wisp’s spirits and he’ll offer you a choice between two rewards:
- Something new
- Something expensive
Something expensive is exactly what you’d imagine, but, and it’s a big but, Wisp admits he’s not great at valuing stuff. This means you could receive something particularly pricey, or something that’s actually not at all. It’s a risk reward scenario.
On the other hand, something new will always guarantee you’ll be rewarded with an item you don’t own already. This makes it considerably less risky, but obviously it may not be as valuable as if you’d lucked out on ‘something expensive’, for example.
Either option is entirely up to you, but we imagine ‘something new’ will come into its own once you’ve sunk a considerable number of hours into the game and collected a hoard of stuff.
