Artifact: Tournament guide

0

Everything we know about Artifact's tournament system.

Our Artifact tournament guide covers everything we know about custom tournaments in the game, and will be updated with more detail at launch.

Artifact is due to launch in the very near future, and Valve aren’t messing around when when it comes to in-game tournament system.

Not only is there a whopping $1,000,000 pro player competition in the works, there’s also a custom tournament system built directly into the game client, and it’ll be available from launch.

In this article we’re outlining everything we currently know about the Artifact tournament system, and we expect to add a great more detail to it once the beta begins next week. Until then, we’ve got you covered with all of the officially announced information.

Note that this guide is a work in progress and currently covers the basics of what we know about Artifact’s Tournament system. As soon as the beta goes live we’ll be expanding all of our articles considerably with the latest information direct from the game.

Artifact: Tournament Overview

Only a few details of the Artifact Tournament system have been revealed by Valve so far, but here’s everything we do know ahead of launch:

  • Tournaments are considered to be one of the key ways that players will be able to make use of their decks without paying an entrance fee.
  • At launch, Swiss and Single-Eliminations formats are being supported, but further modes may become available over time.
  • Artifact tournaments can be created by anyone – individual players, groups of friends, or even third-party organisations.
  • Whoever acts as the tournament host can decide on a number of different aspects of the competition. They can set the overall structure, the duration of the tournament, and make any card restrictions they want to see followed by participants.
  • Customisation options described by Valve so far include limiting play to certain card rarities (great for budget players), or using only the preconstructed decks that will exist in the Call to Arms event.
  • Once you’ve created a tournament, you can make the event public or restricted to those on your friends list only.
  • Although things may change in the future, tournaments created by players won’t involve any prize money or entrance fees.
  • Additionally, Valve has stated that it intends to expand on the tournament system for Artifact over time, and add additional configuration options.

Artifact: Preview Tournament Video

A Preview Tournament featuring some of the game’s best players (so far!) took place early in November.

If you’d like to learn more about what tournament play in the game looks like, we highly recommend watching this video of the final match between Joel Larsson and Mogwai:

That’s the end of the first edition of our Artifact tournament guide, but we’ll have a big update for this article next week once the beta has begun.
