Call of Duty: Modern Warfare and Warzone – How to unlock Akimbo dual-wielding
They nerfed akimbo snakeshots. Now it's Burst Renetti time.
Modern Warfare and Warzone allow you to use Akimbo with pistols, letting you dual-wield your handguns. It’s particularly strong with the .357 Magnums combined with the Snakeshot attachment, as well as the Burst Renettis, so we’ve got some tips on that too.
COD’s pistols have historically not been particularly powerful, but in close quarters you’re essentially able to double your damage output with Akimbo, so it’s pretty damn useful.
How to unlock Akimbo in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare
You’ll need to head to the Weapons tab in Multiplayer first, and grab your pistol of choice. Since they’re not hugely powerful, you might struggle to level your guns up to the point where you unlock the appropriate perk for the Akimbo challenges. Akimbo can be found in the Gunsmith under ‘Perks’, and is at the bottom of each list.
Here are the criteria you’ll need to fulfil in order to unlock Akimbo for each pistol.
- X16: Get 3 kills in 5 different matches using the Sleight of Hand perk with the X16.
- 1911: Get 3 kills in 5 different matches using the Mo’Money perk with the 1911.
- .357: Get 3 kills in 5 different matches using the Recon perk with the .357.
- M19: Get 3 kills in 5 different matches using the Frangible – Wounding perk with the M19.
- .50 GS: Get 3 kills in 5 different matches using the FMJ perk with the .50 GS.
- Renetti: Get 3 kills in 5 different matches using the Mo’ Money perk with the Renetti.
With Akimbo attached, you’ll be far more effective on close-range maps like the carnage of Shipment and Rust, as well as the indoor sections of Talsik Backlot.
How to get the .357 Akimbo Snakeshot
The Snakeshot ammunition attachment for the .357 is key to running the gun in Warzone. We’d go so far as to say it’s almost worthless without it, but you’ll need to grind it out for the unlock. It’s an ammunition attachment that lets you use shotgun ammo in your pistol.
The .357 with both Snakeshot and Akimbo absolutely shred enemies in Warzone. At closer ranges, you’ll be hard-pressed to find a better burst damage option at the moment, and you don’t even need to run Overkill in your loadouts to do it.
All you need to do to unlock Snakeshot is level up your .357 pistol to rank 29. It’ll take a little while, but is well worth doing if you want that sweet sweet shotgun ammo.
Unfortunately, it has since seen a nerf, with its damage range decreased significantly so you won’t be able to one-shot kill people with full armour from quite as far away. It’s still super strong in close-quarters though, so don’t reject the akimbo snakeshots just yet!
How to get the Akimbo Burst Renetti
The Renetti is the new pistol added in season 3 of Modern Warfare. In both Modern Warfare and Warzone, it’s rather powerful, especially compared to its light-ammo counterparts. Check out our Modern Warfare and Warzone best pistols page for more information.
The Renetti has solid damage output in general, but when you unlock the Burst attachment, it really shines. Particularly in Warzone, you’ll be able to completely shred the armour from your foes with Burst and Akimbo close up.
You can unlock Burst with the Renetti by levelling up the gun to 46. Once you’re there, check your Barrel attachments in the Gunsmith and you’ll be able to equip it, giving you burst fire which, combined with the Lightweight Trigger and a quick trigger finger, almost amounts to a fully-automatic machine pistol.
It’s a bit of a grind to get to level 46 on the gun, but using Double Weapon XP Tokens and hitting up small-map playlists which include the likes of Shipment and Rust can make this happen a lot faster, so we’d fully recommend giving it a shot and trying out the Akimbo Burst Renettis in Warzone.
