Similar to the Uplink game mode in past Call of Duty games, Gridiron sees you battle over possession of a ball and fight to chuck it into the opposing team’s goal. You can pass the ball to your allies or leg it in the hope that you can line up that perfect shot. While Search and Destroy’s intensity stems from a constant fear of the unknown, Gridiron’s the complete opposite. You’re constantly aware of the ball’s location and you’re scrambling desperately to chase it down and score – it’s thrilling stuff.
Gridiron’s tough to do well in though, as it’s not centered around getting kills or capturing an objective. It’s all about coordination and teamwork, which is pretty tricky if you’re playing with a bunch of randomers.
Thankfully we’re here to help you out and get your started with Gridiron. We’ve put together a number of tips and tricks down below which’ll hopefully change the way you approach this mode and ensure you’re scoring some wonder goals.

How does Gridiron Work?
Basic Outline
- Two teams of 12 players.
- There are two goals at either end of the map and a ball which spawns in the center.
- Teams must score points by throwing this ball into the opposing team’s goal.
- Players can pick the ball up by running over it, or intercepting it in the air.
- Players can pass the ball or throw the ball.
- Players who pick up the ball will receive an armour buff making them harder to take down.
- You’re only able to melee with the ball in hand, but it’s a one hit kill.
- Scorestreaks take significantly more kills to activate.
- There’s a 10 minute time limit.
- The first team to reach 50 points, or the team with the most points after 10 minutes have elapsed wins.
- You earn 6 point for throwing the ball into the goal. You earn 7 for running it in.
Tips and Tricks
- First and foremost, this is an objective based game mode – so forget about that kill-death ratio and focus on getting that ball in the goal.
- When you first spawn in, it’s important to secure possession of the ball as quickly as you can. This way you’ll be in the driving seat from the very off.
- If you’ve got the ball, it’s vital that you keep possession. As long as the enemy team don’t have the ball, then they can’t score!
- It’s tempting to beeline it towards the goal if you’ve got the ball in hand. It’s essential that you keep a level head and first pay attention to your radar before making a move. Check if there are any enemies about and see where your teammates are positioned.
- If your teammate has picked up the ball and they’re nearby, make sure you go and back them up. Remember that they’re defenseless with the ball equipped!
- When you want to pass the ball to a teammate, ensure that they’re in a good position first.
- If you’ve been handed the ball, wait for your teammates to position around you. This way you’ll have options to pass and hopefully they’ll back you up so you can advance.
- You’ll see a red marker if the enemy gains possession of the ball and it’s key that you’re thinking ahead so you can intercept them.
- As the ball carrier, try and avoid rushing into the open and take a flanking route instead. You’ll encounter less resistance this way.
- If you’re vaguely close to the goal with the ball, throwing it in from a distance is a far easier way of scoring.
