Fans of competitive FPS games may have heard of Crossfire, but never thought of it as a big player in the market. The likes of Counter Strike and Call of Duty dominate in the West, but in Asia – especially China – Crossfire has been massive for years.
Even now, Crossfire looks and feels extremely dated. There’s a totally remastered HD version which has been through several beta phases over in Asia, but we’ll likely not see it for a while in the West. With this in mind, the recently announced CrossfireX will be exciting news for FPS fans who’ve always wanted to see what makes this series so popular overseas.

What is CrossfireX?
CrossfireX is a free-to-play first-person shooter for Xbox One. It’s similar to Counter Strike, as it pits two factions against one another (Global Risk and Black List), time to kill is very low, and it’s largely skill-based – aim is incredibly important.
Remedy, the folks who’ve given us Max Payne, Alan Wake, and Control, are in charge of the game’s Story campaign.
To get a feel for the gameplay, we’d recommend watching the trailer above. It shows off combat, movement, weaponry and what looks to be some special killstreaks too.
The original Crossfire has amassed over 650 million registered players since its launch in 2007, which makes it one of the biggest PC games in the world. It’s not huge out here in the West, but over in Asia it’s absolutely massive.
Crossfire hasn’t changed since its launch over ten years ago, so unsurprisingly, it looks and feels incredibly dated. However, there’s a totally remastered CrossfireHD version currently available for pre-registration over in China. We imagine it’ll release over here at some point, but it could take a while.
Will CrossfireX be playable on PC?
So far, there has been no word on whether CrossfireX will be playable on PC. There’s a moment in its initial announcement trailer at XO19 where one of the developers is using keyboard and mouse, which suggests this control method is supported.
As we’ve mentioned above, the totally remastered CrossfireHD is currently entering a pre-registration phase over in China. It’s a complete overhaul of the original game but it retains the classic Crossfire feel which has brought its millions of players on board. We imagine they’ll launch this version of the game globally for PC, but keep CrossfireX separate and exclusive to Xbox One.
