Legendary Shards are one of the most important currencies you can get your hands on when you’re deep in the thick of Destiny 2’s end-game.
Not only are they used to enhance weapons and armour, increasing the Power level of these items in the process, they’re also used to buy the tastiest gear made available by Xur, who pops up somewhere in the world every week.
In the original Destiny, Xur was all about the Strange Coins, but this currency is gone altogether in the sequel, and it’s those Legendary Shards you want to be farming at every opportunity.
This new system provides an extra level of depth to the decision-making process as you flesh out your equipment collection in the end-game. Is it better to spend your Legendary Shards on boosting your existing equipment, or is Xur’s treats this week worthy of a bigger investment?

How to farm Legendary Shards
The easiest way to amass plenty of Legendary Shards is to dismantle Legendary (ie “purple” gear) and Exotic (“yellow” gear) at Level 20. Once you’re in the thick of end-game activities, you should be able to churn out a surprising number of Legendary Shards as you rattle through the gearing-up process.
There’s also – apparently, but unconfirmed by ourselves – the possibility of receiving Legendary Shards when you decrypt those Faction Engrams received when you increase your reputation with any of the core faction vendors.
We also understand that it’s possible to receive Legendary Shards piecemeal as you beat bosses in Strikes. It won’t happen often, but it’s a definite possibility – if you love farming Strikes, you should be able to grab a fair few in this manner.
It’s also rumoured that the chests spread all around the four worlds of Destiny 2 can also contain Legendary Shards.
What to spend Legendary Shards on
Right now our advice on spending Legendary Shards is pretty simple for the average player: don’t! In time we’ll have a very clear idea of which weapons and armour items are worthy of upgrade, and what the best loadouts for specific PVE and PVP challenges will be.
