Destiny 2: Machine Gun Frame quest guide
How to complete the Black Armory quest.
Our Destiny 2 Machine Gun Frame guide explains how to obtain this quest, where to find the weapon core, eliminate hive with power weapons, defeat powerful enemies and access the Volundyr Forge.
Destiny 2’s main Black Armory quest has you attempting to reforge a special Machine Gun Frame, and as you’d expect, it’s one big ol’ grind to get there.
It’s a sequence of steps that’ll have you tracking down a special enemy to obtain a weapon core, before moving onto Hive enemies, and finally – Powerful Enemies. There’s actually not much too it, but the process can be a real slog if you don’t know where the best places are to seek out the foes you’re after.
Below we’ve outlined all the Machine Gun Frame quest steps, where to find the weapon core to kick the grind off, and the best places to farm both Hive and Powerful enemies to complete this quest line.

Where to find the Weapon Core and Black Armory Crates
Your first step is to visit the Spider over on the Tangled Shore. Speak to him and he’ll give you a “Black Armory Badge” which’ll grant you access to the Annex, a new location in the Tower. It’s case of heading back there and speaking to Ada-1 to kick the Black Armory quest line off.
Once you’ve spoken to Ada-1, she’ll give you a Basic Machine Gun Frame. The first quest is split into two parts: Find a Weapon Core from a Black Armory crate, and collect 25 Compound Ether.
The Weapon Core part is easily the most troublesome step, as it relies solely on a certain type of enemy spawning.
Head on over to the southern outskirts of the EDZ, near to a long bridge and a rusted old car. It’s here where a “Forge Saboteur” Servitor will spawn. Defeat this enemy and search for a large black crate in the area nearby. Interact with it, and you’ll obtain the Weapon Core.
If this enemy isn’t appearing for you, don’t worry. Keep spawning back at the nearest landing zone and travelling to this area. Be persistent and the enemy will either be waiting for you, or spawn in. It’s a pain, but there’s nothing you can do unfortunately!
This video by Esoterickk is well worth a watch as it shows exactly where to find the Forge Saboteur.
Once you’ve done all this, you need to collect 25 Compound Ether. This isn’t too difficult and it’s a case of clearing out as many Fallen enemies as possible. Defeat them and it’ll be instantly added to your inventory, so there’s no minesweeping to be done here.
We found heading into Lost Sectors some of the easiest ways to obtain lots of Compound Ether. If there’s a Public Event going on, then get involved. There’s also a spot in the church ground opposite Devrim Kay which has Fallen enemies spawning constantly, sot this is also a great spot for farming.
Where to get 15 multikills and 50 Hive Kills using Power Weapons fast
For this quest step, you’ll need to earn 15 multikills and 50 hive kills using Power Weapons. We’d highly recommend participating in Escalation Protocol as the sheer number of Hive enemies is unmatched, and you’re highly likely to get Power Ammo supplies too.
Rocket Launchers, Grenade Launchers or Thunderlord are a great way of clearing mobs fast and earning yourself plenty of multikills. Just wait for a load of Thralls to bunch up and let loose.
Where to find Powerful Enemies
This is where the fun begins. This quest step requires 25 Powerful Enemy kills, and we’ve found the best methods to be activities which require clearing waves of enemies.
Here are some ways you can get this done:
- Escalation Protocol
- Blind Well
- Raids and Raid Lairs
- Spider’s Lost Sector Bounties
Once this is complete, you’ve then got to find yet more Powerful Enemies. This time you’re looting them for 20 Radiant Seeds. Again, rinse and repeat the processes we’ve listed above and you’ll gradually start amassing a collection of seeds.
Visit the Volundyr Forge
Now that you’ve got all your Radiant Seeds, visit Ada-1 back at the Tower and you’ll receive one final step. Find it on your map, set it as your waypoint and head there. It’s a high level encounter, so you’ll want to be at least 610+ Power Level before taking it on, mind.
