Log in to Overwatch today and you might just find yourself the lucky recipient of 11 entirely free Loot Boxes. Some have speculated that the gift is a deliberate act by Blizzard, and provided as an apology for the spate of DDoS attacks that have hit Overwatch in recent weeks. Otherwise believe it might be a hidden milestone reward for levelling or ranking up in the game.
The truth is a little less interesting: it’s a bug, and one that’s related to an Asian promotion for the game that’s gone a little haywire, and started spitting out Loot Boxes for certain players outside of this region. There’s no way of knowing who will receive the free boxes, so you’ll have to log into the game and check there to see if you got lucky.

The good news is that if you’ve been gifted these Loot Boxes, then it seems – according to one chat with a GM at least – that you’ll be able to keep the spoils contained within. “You can totally open them and enjoy the loot in them!” the Blizzard wrote responded. “It’s a bug on our side, so while I know it’s alarming, they were sent for free and are yours to keep.”
