How to catch a coelacanth in Animal Crossing: New Horizons
If you’re looking for coelacanth specifically, you’re not exactly under any time constraints. You might still have the coelacanth elude you though.
You’ll find the coelacanth in Animal Crossing: New Horizons in the sea. It’ll show up all over the place, but you might need to run up and down the coast to keep waiting for this guy to spawn.
In both the northern and southern hemispheres, coelacanth spawn all year round, but only in the rain. If it’s not raining in your town, don’t even bother.
What you can do to get a coelacanth is head over to another island. Check with friends for their weather conditions, or try your luck with a Nook Miles Ticket to take a Mystery Tour – you might just catch it on a rainy day.
Unfortunately, rain doesn’t guarantee this rare fish. We’ve filled our pockets with horse mackerel and those bloody C+ sea bass far more than we’d care to admit. You’ll just have to keep trying.
The shadow you’re looking for is a large one – if you’ve caught a sturgeon before it’s that size. Otherwise, you want one that’s just slightly larger than a sea bass..

How to get a coelacanth to appear
Crafting fish bait will make your coelacanth journey far smoother. This’ll require a bit of beachcombing, but it’s well worth it.
Dig up manila clams over on your beach. They can be found by their little water spouts coming up from the sand – just equip your shovel and dig them up! They’ll keep appearing as long as you jog up and down your coastline a bit.
Each manila clam can be made into one fish bait at a DIY crafting bench – you’ll want as many as you can get your hands on.
