The pierfect catch.

Tuna and Blue Marlin are a couple if the rarer fish you can catch in Animal Crossing: New Horizons. Here’s how to get them.

It’s not as much of a rush as Stringfish or Sturgeon, but you’ll want to get catching these fish whenever you can – Blathers will be a very happy bird.

How to catch tuna and blue marlin in Animal Crossing: New Horizons

You might find a tuna or blue marlin by chance, but in order to maximise your chances, follow these tips.

Tuna and blue marlin are both found on the pier – the wooden bit that goes out into the sea on your beach. You can see what it looks like below.

In the northern hemisphere, tuna and blue marlin spawn here between November and April, so at time of publishing you’ll have around a month to grab them. Blue marlin actually have more months available, also being found between July and September, giving them only a couple months off throughout the year.

If you’re in the southern hemisphere, they’re both available between May and October, with the blue marlin also coming out in January, February and March.

Annoyingly, going to the pier doesn’t guarantee these rare fish. We had pockets filled with sea bass and horse mackerel before anything half decent showed up. At least it’s easy bells.

You’re looking for a large-sized shadow in the water – slightly larger than that of the overly-abundant sea bass. Be quick about it, these guys love to bite and go. You’ll know when you’ve caught it thanks to your controller’s vibration going absolutely off the rails.

How to get a tuna and blue marlin to appear

You’ll want to use fish bait to make the search for tuna and blue marlin as smooth as possible.

Head over to your beach and run around it looking for those little spurts of water what pop out of the ground every so often, and use a shovel to dig there. Once you have a few manila clams, head to a crafting table. One manila clam can be crafted into one bait, so make as many as you can and head over to the pier. Put them out into the water and a fish will immediately appear, so keep putting it out there for as long as it takes!

Hopefully, you’ve successfully caught yourself a tuna, a blue marlin, or both. Well done!

There’s more rare fish available too though – check out our guide on how to catch a sturgeon and how to catch a stringfish for more information! We’ve also written you a step-by-step on making medicine for those times you get roughed up by nasty wasps.
