Go and sea the world.
Animal Crossing: New Horizons is at its best when you’ve linked up with a few friends. Here’s how to visit their islands and invite them round.
Animal Crossing islands are ideal retreats for solitude and escape. You might fancy showing off your designs and beautiful island to friends though! Here’s how to connect with fellow Animal Crossing: New Horizons players.
How to play with friends on Animal Crossing: New Horizons
It’s pretty easy to get onto your pals’ island on Animal Crossing: New Horizons. There are a few ways to do it, both locally and online.
Visiting an Animal Crossing island with online play
Just follow these easy steps and you’ll be online in a flash!
Step 1: Nintendo Online. You’ll need to be a member of Nintendo Online, which can be purchased on the eshop. It costs £3.49 per month – full pricing info can be found on Nintendo’s site.
Step 2: Add your friends on Nintendo Switch. Head to your Switch’s home screen and scroll up to your profile image at the top left of the screen. Scroll down to ‘Add Friend’. You can either put in the other person’s friend code (found in their ‘Profile’ section), or add them through local connection or previously-played games. You can also scroll up to ‘Friend Suggestions’, where Facebook, Twitter, and previous Nintendo console friends can be added.
Step 3: Go to the airport. You can’t do this on the first day your island is open, but after this you’ll be ready to go. Talk to Orville until he’s explained all the stuff from the legal eagles, and then you’ll be able to fly or open up your island!
Step 4: Open your island! After this, one of you can select the ‘I want visitors’ option with Orville, and then select ‘Via online play’. From here, choose to invite ‘all my friends’ (or best friends only if you’re feeling exclusive), and they’ll all be able to find you through step 5.
Step 5: Visit! Next, everyone who wants to visit the island can go hang out. Select ‘I wanna visit someone’ with Orville, and choose ‘online play’. From there, connect to the internet and search for a friend’s island. You’ll be able to choose if multiple friends’ islands are open at once too. Enjoy!

How to visit with a Dodo Code
Using a Dodo Code lets you visit islands without being on someone’s friends list. It’s super easy. You’ll still need to use step 1 above to get onto Nintendo Online, but afterwards you just need to select the Dodo Code option rather than inviting friends round.
The person opening their island just needs to note down the 5 digit code, and send it to whoever is visiting. Remember, the code changes with each visit, so you’ll need to note down a different one each time!
Of course, you can narrow it down to only friends and best friends, but selecting ‘the more the merrier’ means anyone with the Dodo Code can enter your island. Be careful with this one though – you don’t want to be leaving loads of materials on the ground for randomers to steal.
You can always go back to Orville in the airport to shut the gate again, and we’ve got a page on quietly leaving friends’ islands if you’re sick of the massive wait times of this game’s multiplayer.
If you forget the Dodo Code, just pop back to Orville and he’ll remind you too.
How to connect with local play on Animal Crossing: New Horizons
You don’t need Nintendo Switch online for this one – you just have to be in the same room as the person you want to connect with. You need to select ‘local play’ instead of online in the conversations with Orville.
As long as one person selects ‘I want visitors’ and everyone else chooses ‘I wanna fly’, you’ll be easily able to hang out on each others’ islands.
The animations for visiting islands does take a while, so be warned – if you’ve got people coming and going all the time, it’ll force everyone to stop what they’re doing.
