Legends of Runeterra – Best Budget Decks (April 2020)

0

Cheap and cheerful.

Progression and unlocks aren’t the fastest in Legends of Runeterra. Here’s some cheap budget decks to help you win without champions.

If you’re looking for a rundown of the best decks Legends of Runeterra has to offer, check out our Legends of Runeterra Best Decks page!

We’ve put together a few decks on the cheap in order to help you get a head start on your enemies. Deck building can be a pricey endeavour, especially when you’re building around Champions, so here are a few decks that include no Champions at all, and as few Epic cards as possible.

Throughout the open beta, the meta will develop and we’ll keep you up to date on the latest budget decks to help you keep up with your foes. These Champion-less decks might even help trick your opponents, since without a Champion revealed to them, your deck’s goals are mysterious and unknown until you start playing.

What are the best budget decks in Legends of Runteterra?

We’ve been toying around with the game’s cheap as chips Common cards, and it turns out there are some decent combos and synergies available. It’s important to stick to a gameplan, and whilst fancy pants decks featuring Champions are focused around using those Champions to great effect, you’ve got different tools in your arsenal.

Bilgewater Aggro Deck

With Rising Tides and its new Bilgewater Region, we thought we’d add a deck utilising Bilgewater’s strengths. This deck is fairly cheap and uses no Champions, instead relying on the direct damage available to both Noxus and the brand new Bilgewater.

Noxus Bilgewater
3 x Blade’s Edge 3 x Warning Shot
3 x Legion Saboteur 3 x Jagged Butcher
3 x Legion Rearguard 3 x Pool Shark
3 x Legion Grenadier 3 x Dreadway Deckhand
3 x Crimson Disciple 3 x Salvage
3 x Imperial Demolitionist
1 x Might
3 x Noxian Fervor
3 x Decimate

It’s a pretty simple deck to play if you know what you’re doing. Stay on curve early on and aim to keep your units alive to hit their Nexus. You’re not necessarily super worried about your own Nexus’ health – you should be trying to kill them as quickly as possible regardless. Some solid combos to look out for are using Imperial Demolitionist on your Crimson Disciple for extra Nexus damage, as well as Dreadway Deckhand‘s excellent Powder Keg summon, which will give you an extra 1 damage to the enemy Nexus with a skill or spell.

Otherwise, it’s a pretty standard aggressive deck. You have a bit of card draw to stretch the game out a little, but the longer the game drags on, the worse your situation is.

Noxus Aggro Deck

It turns out, the region of Noxus is filled to the brim with cards whose main goal is to smash your enemy’s Nexus as quickly and savagely as possible. The likes of Legion Saboteur dealing early damage combined with Decimate to finish your enemy off, the region of Noxus offers a great deal of early damage. Sometimes your opponent just won’t have the tools to deal with it too.

Noxus Piltover and Zaun
3 x Legion Rearguard 3 x Academy Prodigy
3 x Legion Saboteur 3 x Boomcrew Rookie
3 x Precious Pet
3 x Brothers’ Bond
3 x Legion Grenadier
1 x Trifarian Gloryseeker
3 x Trifarian Hopeful
3 x Arachnoid Sentry
3 x Might
3 x Reckless Trifarian
3 x Basilisk Rider
3 x Decimate

In all honesty, this is not a difficult deck to play. Either you’ll win or you’ll lose, based mostly on whether or not your opponent can handle your deck’s aggressive power. Mulligan for your Legion Rearguard and Legion Saboteur – basically any 1-drop you can start attacking with immediately. Boomcrew Rookies can start racking up damage pretty swiftly as well, and against grindy, control units like Braum, Trifarian Gloryseeker can be a lifesaver. For that final damage push, your Basilisk Rider will almost always trigger its Allegiance ability since most of your deck is from Noxus, and Decimate is 4 Nexus damage as long as your opponent isn’t chilling with a Deny in hand. If all this isn’t enough, you’ll be out of fuel pretty swiftly and ripe for the killing, so there’s no shame in hitting that Surrender icon.

Shadow Isles Last Breath

The Shadow Isles region has a bunch of spicy Last Breath synergy, encouraging you to kill off your own units in return for bonuses. Thankfully, these cards aren’t super pricey, so if this style of play appeals to you then here you go. Most of this deck consists of Common cards, with a couple of Rares sprinkled in.

Shadow Isles Noxus
3 x Ravenous Butcher 3 x Precious Pet
3 x Hapless Aristocrat 3 x Legion Grenadier
3 x Warden’s Prey
3 x Cursed Keeper
3 x Glimpse Beyond
3 x Mist’s Call
1 x Onslaught of Shadows
3 x Phantom Prankster
3 x Ancient Crocolith
3 x Chronicler of Ruin
3 x Ethereal Remitter
3 x Scuttlegeist

For your mulligan, look for 1 and 2 drops, as well as Ravenous Butcher. This 0 cost 3/2 can set you well on your way to early pressure, especially if you can trigger a friendly unit’s Last Breath. If you’re going second, you can get an enormous 2 mana 7/6 in stats by playing Cursed Keeper into Ravenous Butcher, allowing you a great deal of early tempo. In addition Precious Pet is a surprisingly strong early play, as the Fearsome keyword will often force suboptimal plays and trades from your opponent.

If you can get your Phantom Prankster onto the board, you’ll be in a solid position to bring the aggression on your opponent, dealing one point of damage with every single friendly unit who dies. Don’t forget to strategically use your Glimpse Beyond spells as well – if your enemy has a spell on the stack that’s about to kill a friendly unit, you might as well kill it yourself to benefit from the card draw. Alternatively, you can use it on the aforementioned Last Breath units to benefit from their effects.

You haven’t got a huge amount of late-game, but should the need arise you’ll be able to bring out some beefier units. Ethereal Remitter is a great shout to both trigger friendly Last Breaths and summon stronger minions than you’d expect. Also, Scuttlegeist functions brilliantly as a closer – a couple of 0 mana 5/5s might be that final push you need to finish off your foe. Remember to take your Last Breaths into account, and this deck should serve you well – you can even substitute a copy of The Undying in there if you happen to have it!

Elusive Deck

For this form of aggressive deck, your goal is to get as many Elusive units on board at the same time. These units can’t be blocked by enemies who don’t have Elusive themselves, and most decks don’t have many of them in stock. This means you can start chucking them onto the board and hitting the enemy Nexus before they can do anything about it, which can work excellently to take them down early on.

Ionia Demacia
3 x Inspiring Mentor 3 x Fleetfeather Tracker
3 x Navori Bladescout 2 x Dawnspeakers
3 x Greenglade Duo 3 x Prismatic Barrier
3 x Keeper of Masks 3 x Laurent Bladekeeper
3 x Navori Conspirator 2 x Back to Back
3 x Deny
2 x Greenglade Elder
3 x Shadow Assassin
1 x Solitary Monk
3 x Kinkou Lifeblade

With no Champions, you’ll be relying on all sorts of different cards in your deck. Your early game is super strong, offering you Elusive units from the start. Navori Bladescout can deal 2 damage to the enemy Nexus and continue to present a problem to the enemy, whilst Inspiring Mentor sets you up for some tasty plays further down the line. Use him to buff your Greenglade Duo or Navori Conspirator, then use your Conspirator to recall him and buff even more units.

As a deck from Ionia, Deny is your best friend. It’ll stop your enemy from clearing away your Elusive units, and help you remain in control as long as possible. Dawnspeakers should be put on board as soon as possible too – a small unit dying leads to the entire rest of your board getting +1/+1.

Finally, once you’re in control, the likes of Kinkou Lifeblade can take you to the finishing line, healing your Nexus whilst dealing Elusive damage to the enemy’s. Back to Back can be that perfect finisher. If you happen to have a couple of copies or Wildcards, substitute two Prismatic Barriers for The Empyrean or Zed for extra late-game power.
