Mogu Rogue deck list guide – Saviors of Uldum – Hearthstone (August 2019)

0

How to play our experimental Mogu Rogue deck in the Saviors of Uldum meta.

Our Mogu Rogue deck list guide features the best deck list for Season 65 of Hearthstone (August 2019), and the beginning of Saviors of Uldum. You can also find some general strategy advice and a breakdown of the deck’s key combos, but we will continue to add more over time.

Mogu Rogue is a combo deck built around the new 1 mana 1/1 neutral card Mogu Cultist. The goal of the deck is to fill your board with Cultists and summon Highkeeper Ra, who will hopefully win the entire game for you single-handedly.

The tough bit is getting 7 copies of the same minion on the board at the same time. It’ll be a fun one to experiment with. We hope this deck works out as planned, but if you’re worried, we’d recommend waiting to see if Mogu Rogue can make a splash in the meta before crafting any cards for it.

Given the required experimentation, this deck will need refinement as a constant stream of cards are being released in the build up to launch, so check back here for updates.

General strategy

Highkeeper Ra is a ludicrously powerful minion. A 20/20 who deals 20 damage to ALL enemies (minions and face) at the end of your turn, he’ll often be your entire win condition.

Early Game: Draw through your deck like your life depends on it. Technically it does. Use your Backstabs, Eviscerates and the like to remove enemy threats and Sap them if they become overly reliant on a single minion. Your Waggle Pick can deal a decent bit of damage, and don’t be afraid to drop a Lab Recruiter if you desperately need to contest on the board.

Mid Game: Soon enough, you’ll be building up something of a hand. Your combo pieces should be coming together, and your Togwaggle’s Scheme should be accruing a decent number of upgrades. WANTED is a solid choice for the mid game, as adding the Coin to your hand and removing a minion can be hugely important for later combos. The mid game is about staying alive, but if you can, start shuffling Mogu Cultists into your deck. Using a Lab Recruiter or Scheme, you can fill your deck with them, although it’s best to wait until you have what you need in hand. If you’re struggling for card draw, a solid turn with the Gadgetzan Auctioneer can help, throwing away your cheap spells to ensure a bunch of draws from your deck.

Late Game: The time has come. If you’ve survived to a point when you can get away with playing like this, we’re impressed. Tak Nozwhisker combined with a Togwaggle’s Scheme or Lab Recruiter allows you to shuffle Mogu Cultists into your deck whilst also getting copies in your hand for immediate use. Jepetto Joybuzz can help with minion drawing, and can pull out Faceless Manipulators to turn into copies of the Mogu Cultists. It’s a ridiculous amount to pull off, and if you didn’t manage to draw Tak and just have a deck filled with Mogu Cultists, you can always throw a hail mary with Myra’s Unstable Element, hoping to draw them all.

It’s important to remember that this gameplan is adaptive – you’ll have to spend mana dealing with enemy threats as well as putting your own thing together, so there’s no one right way to play this part of the game. Eventually, you’ll have Mogu Cultists in hand, and placing them all down will cause them to be sacrificed to Highkeeper Ra, who will then (probably) ruin your opponent’s day. If that’s not enough, you can shuffle more copies of Highkeeper Ra into your deck now that he’s on the board. If you cast Myra’s Unstable Element and have an empty deck, playing a shuffle card will guarantee a draw of Ra on your next turn, almost certainly putting your opponent out of their misery.

Mogu Rogue Mulligan Guide

As it’s early days, it goes without saying that this part of the deck is subject to change. Your deck has very little in the way of early game, so the goal is to drag things out until you can hit the opponent with a sucker punch.

1. Backstab and Eviscerate are vital to ensuring the enemy board remains in check.

2. Against decks like Mech Hunter, where large minions spring up out of nowhere, Sap is necessary to survive.

3. It’s not at all a priority, but if you have Togwaggle’s Scheme and can start upgrading it by holding it for several turns, it’ll be very helpful later on in the game.

Mogu Rogue tips, combos and synergies

Mogu Rogue will be a difficult deck to play well, as often you will get overly pressured too early on and fail to get the combo started. Here are some things to keep an eye out for when playing this deck:

– Remember, when you play Faceless Manipulator to copy your Mogu Cultists, they don’t copy the Battlecry. Play a ‘real’ Mogu Cultist as the last one to fill your board completely, and then Highkeeper Ra will be summonned.

Faceless Manipulator holds a lot of utility in this deck. It can copy your Cultists if needed, but can also become Highkeeper Ra after you’ve summoned him. There’s also the situational use of the card when defending – gaining a copy of the enemy’s big minion is often a great bonus.

WANTED is in the deck to facilitate your big turns. Maybe you need that extra mana to play one final Mogu Cultist, but similarly it helps when drawing a bunch of cards with Gadgetzan Auctioneer.

Myra’s Unstable Element is great for refilling your hand. Remember, if you’re not careful it can leave you without options and destroy your chances of pulling off the ‘Highkeeper Ra special’ you’re after.

Shadowstep decreases the mana cost of the minion brought back to your hand by 2. This allows you to double up on important Battlecries to pull your combo together, such as Jepetto Joybuzz, and it gives you the chance to Rush in with Zilliax twice in one turn.

– Remember that Walk the Plank only destroys minions at full health, so don’t make the mistake of casting it after Fan of Knives.

– Remember that your entire board has to be empty for your Mogu Cultist plan to work out. Don’t start playing them out, cackling maniacally, before suddenly realising you have a big chunky Tak Nozwhisker in the way.

– Shuffling copies of Highkeeper Ra into your deck and drawing them with Jepetto Joybuzz will mean that Highkeeper Ra will be a 1 mana 1/1 but still deal 20 damage to all enemies at the end of your turn.
