Riot promises sweeping Teamfight Tactics changes in patch 9.14 and beyond

There's a lot to look forward to.

Riot Games has revealed its plans for Teamfight Tactics’ upcoming 9.14 patch, as well as future updates too. The blog post gives us an insight into how the team will implement ranked matchmaking, drop Seasonal content, tweak item RNG, offer a more comprehensive UI, and improve player rewards.

First up, the ranked queue will be going live at the start of patch 9.14, or the “Beta Season” as it’s otherwise being referred to. Riot understands that Teamfight Tactics is based around RNG, so “while you can’t win every game of TFT, if you place in the Top 4 you’ll typically gain LP and move up in rank”.

Twisted Fate, a Pirate Sorcerer will also be the first new champion to arrive with patch 9.14. Riot mentions that players will need to think about the “early game differently”, which suggests he’ll be a low-cost unit who’ll likely spice up the early stages of a match.

Riot then addresses future content, which it plans to introduce with “almost every patch”. The first new Origin is reportedly “coming up quickly” and seasons will last around three months in total. Once this first “Beta Season” has come to a close, it’ll release a “second set” featuring new units and origins.

Items play a huge part in Teamfight Tactics, and Riot recognises that the RNG driving drop rates is a “touch too severe” right now. With this in mind, it’s confirmed that “guaranteed drops” will arrive with patch 9.14, and it’s also experimenting with “dropping other things besides items”, such as gold, XP and even champions.

The UI is being overhauled too, with tonnes of new features which will add more clarity to proceedings. Damage meters, Stat Panels, Streak Indicators, Item Previews from the inventory and more are on the way, some of which will drop with the upcoming patch.

Finally, Riot also wants to make clear its “working on longer term progression plans for TFT”. Our money’s on a more fleshed out Battle Pass system.
