Secret Paladin (Standard) deck list and guide – September 2016 – Hearthstone

0

How to sneak up the ladder with Secret Paladin in Season 30.

Our Secret Paladin deck list guide features the best Rise of Shadows deck list for Season 62 of Hearthstone (May 2019). Our Secret Paladin guide also contains Mulligan advice, card combos and strategy tips.

Secret Paladin is a Hearthstone deck that may have you cowering in fear if you played the game during the era of The Grand Tournament. It was a time when Mysterious Challenger reigned supreme, and led Paladin to a ridiculously strong power level that few other decks have matched in the history of Hearthstone.

While we don’t expect the deck to reach those absurd levels once again, Secret Paladin is definitely back on the radar with the release of Rise of Shadows, thanks to a number of intriguing new cards in the latest set. The strategy behind playing the deck has changed somewhat, though, so there’s a new play style to master.

With that in mind, we wanted to make you aware of all the changes to Secret Paladin at this stage of the meta. We’ve got the deck list currently seeing most play on the ranked ladder, as well as our usual batch of strategy advice and tips for the new meta.

UPDATE – MAY 2019 #1

Secret Paladin really hasn’t lived up to the pre-release hype, and so we’re not seeing many experiments with the archetype. For that reason, we’re sticking with our established deck list. Just keep in mind that you’ll have a tough time on the ladder with this one.

Overall strategy

Secret Paladin is all about building an early board presence with your cheap minions and then getting extra value out of them with the help of your class Secrets. This version of the deck is much more aggro-oriented than some previous iterations, so you want to push for damage quickly and look to finish off your opponent before they can deal with the overwhelming tide of buffed minions. Your end game is not quite as ludicrous as it is with Mysterious Challenger in Wild, but other Secret generators should keep your opponents perplexed throughout the game.

Early-game: Getting onto the board and having your cheap minions stick there is the main plan for this aggressive approach to Secret Paladin. You can eke out some extra value with a few fortuitous one damage throws from Knife Juggler, and be sure to use Secrets to backup your creatures – particularly if you can empower Secretkeeper.

You’ll want to try and get into the mind of your opponent and predict their next turn in order to play the best Secret each turn. If you think a spell is coming down then a Never Surrender! will be the right play. If you think they’ll be going for trades then a Noble Sacrifice or Redemption will be a better choice. Try to get twice the value from them by using Commander Rhyssa to really frustrate your foe!

Mid-game: By now your Secretkeeper should be growing nicely, and may end up leading you all the way to victory if your opponent can’t find an answer for it. If you can get Bellringer Sentry out on curve you can keep those Secrets building up further.

Now that Paladin has lost the card draw from Divine Favor you’ll have to play even more aggressively to try and secure the win before you get too far into the late game. Look to buff your minions with Blessing of Kings and Blessing of Might. You may even want to start swinging for face damage with Truesilver Champion in order to whittle your opponent down.

Late-game: You should hopefully have the win in the bag as the match tips over into the late game. Your healthy board should be steadily whittling away at your opponent’s life total and setting them up for a surprise finish using Leeroy Jenkins. If you’re looking thin on the board and in hand, the game has likely slipped away from you this time!

Aggro Opponents

Remember these words of advice when playing against aggro decks:

  • 1. Building a strong Secretkeeper is one solid way to beat aggro as they run little hard removal and will have to commit resources in order to clear it.
  • 2. Trade smart and use your weapons to clear your opponent’s minions and stifle their attempts to compete with you on the board.
  • 3. The one damage flings from Knife Juggler can be significantly effective against lower health aggro minions, so try to find situations where you can queue up the effect multiple times.
  • 4. At some point in the match it’s going to be better to skip minion trading and go straight for their life total. Learn to recognise when their life total is low enough that you can whittle them down, or you’re in a spot where you need to take a risk for the win.

Control opponents

Here’s what you should keep in mind when up against control opponents:

  • 1. As always when facing control decks, don’t over-extend on the board and leave yourself vulnerable to a clear.
  • 2. Use your Secrets to surprise and outwit your opponent. Play many at once so they can’t be sure what they’re swinging into and make a misplay that benefits you greatly.
  • 3. Control decks will generally play at a much slower pace so use that to your advantage and race them down as fast as possible.
  • 4. If you think a big taunt minion is coming down you’re going to need to find a way to punch through it without losing too many resources or wasting a finisher such as Leeroy Jenkins.

Secret Paladin Mulligan guide

You’ll want to uncover these cards in your opening hand for the best start with Secret Paladin:

  • 1. Secretkeeper: An obvious hold as you can power it up with all the Secrets in the deck
  • 2. Sunreaver Spy: Again, another card that’s empowered by your cheap Secrets and can put you ahead in the early game.
  • 3. Argent Squire: Solid one-drop that can stick around on the board and be a nuisance for your opponent to clear.
  • 4. Mysterious Blade: A powerful weapon in the early stage of a match that can eliminate most early drops if you trigger the Battlecry effect.
  • 5. Noble Sacrifice: A good Secret to play early as it can buff your early drops while also keeping them alive if they are attacked.

Secret Paladin tips, combos and synergies

Let’s take a look at the important combos to the new version of Secret Paladin:

– As there are so many cheap Secrets in the deck you should find it very easy to make a powerful Secretkeeper, which will gain +1 / +1 with each Secret you play.

– Similarly, Sunreaver Spy can be quite an imposing threat early if you play the minion after a Secret is on the board.

Mysterious Blade fits perfectly into this deck as you should generally have at least one Secret in play at any time, making the weapon ideal for trades with early game minions.

– You’ll have to ensure you have some way of protecting Commander Rhyssa when she comes onto the board as your opponent will aim to remove her as soon as possible. Use you Secrets to grant her extra Health or a Divine Shield so you can get the full effect of her ability.

Masked Contender can help thin out your deck and get more Secrets onto the battlefield.

Bellringer Sentry puts a Secret from your deck into play. When he dies, another Secret is put into play. If you have no Secrets left in your deck pile during either of these phases, you won’t get the free spell.

Secret Paladin card choices and substitutions

There are a few obvious inclusions that make Secret Paladin work. Here are all the important cards below:

  • Secretkeeper: With all the Secrets you run in the deck this minion can grow out of control very quickly.
  • Never Surrender!: Most of the minions in this deck suffer from low Health values so this Secret helps them stay alive and take down your opponent.
  • Knife Juggler: With all the cheap minions you’ll be playing you should get a lot of dagger throws off of this, which are great as either minion damage or face damage.
  • Mysterious Blade: A great weapon for killing your opponent’s minions in the early game and keeping your own safe.
  • Sunreaver Spy: A nice buff grants this minion some significantly extra value if you can trigger it.
  • Commander Rhyssa: Allows you to get even more value out of your Secrets.
  • Masked Contender: Thins out your deck and gets more Secrets into play at once which is great news for cards like Secretkeeper.
  • Bellringer Sentry: Another way this deck can take full advantage of all the Secrets in it without you having to spend the extra Mana playing them.
  • Blessing of Kings: A substantial buff to your low-cost minions that’ll turn them from niggling annoyance into serious threats.
  • Truesilver Champion: Good value mid-game weapon that can clear a minion from your path or be used for direct damage if the time is right.
  • Leeroy Jenkins: A powerful and important finisher for Secret Paladin that can deal a massive chunk of burst damage.
