Ultimate’s Adventure Mode plants you – as Kirby – on an overworld map when you first start off. It’s filled with numerous branching pathways that each lead to challenges, fighter unlocks and much, much more.
World of Light is a sprawling game mode that’ll set you back a good 50 hours or more, so there’s a lot to take in. To help you get to grips with it, we’ve put together a guide which highlights all the key elements of this story mode in one place.
So without further ado, here’s what you need to know about the World of Light.
World of Light: Overview
Here’s a quick breakdown of what you can expect from Super Smash Bros Ultimate’s adventure:
- When you first begin your journey you’ll be teleported to an overworld style map with branching pathways and sparkling checkpoints. You’ll be controlling Kirby, and it’s almost guaranteed that you’ll control other fighters as you progress.
- Move up to a checkpoint and it’ll reveal who and what you’ll be fighting next. Each fight takes place on a unique stage and with unique rulesets. You’ll need to beat each one of them in order to progress onwards to the next.
- Progress through World of Light and you’ll earn different rewards : Gold Coins, Snacks, Skill Spheres and Spirits.
- Defeat a fighter in this mode and you’ll unlock them for play in both the mode and in the main game itself.
- Items and obstacles can appear on the map too. Treasure chests, waterfalls, red switches that change the landscape and more will all feature. Some of them represent small interactions with no major significance, while some such as the red switch will change the landscape. Minigames also seem to be present too, although it’s unclear how these will work just yet.
- Other means of transportation can be used to traverse the map.
Spirits are essential to progression in World of Light. They’re based off of characters which span the entire Nintendo franchise, and essentially act as augments for your fighters.
There are two different types of Spirit: Primary and Support. Primary Spirits buff your character’s attack, defense or grab power, while Support Spirits attach to them and give your fighter unique abilities. For example, extra jump height, or immunity to fire damage.
Equipped Spirits also determine your team’s Power rating, which in turn, determines the tewards you’ll receive for beating certain stages. You’ll earn better rewards for defeating strong enemies, while lower rated foes won’t earn you as much.
Spirits can also be levelled up by feeding them snacks, or sent on hunts for treasure. There’s a surprising amount of depth to these sprites…

- Players in the World of Light can spend Skill Spheres to level up aspects of their fighter. Essentially, it’s a way of spending points within a skill tree to unlock new abilities, stat buffs and the like.
Any upgrades you purchase in the skill tree are permanent, and they’ll affect all your characters as well. Progress through World of Light and your characters will progress with you too.
