Teamfight Tactics: How to win

We hope you find the tips below helpful, but if you reckon there’s anything important we’ve missed, don’t be afraid to let us know in the comments below.

– How do I get an early advantage? –

While it’s not pivotal which champion you choose right off the bat, the item they’re pre-equipped with can make a massive difference to your overall strength.

Sometimes an item will come pre-equipped on a champion which it just doesn’t match up with. If this is the case, don’t be afraid to refund them as the item will jump straight into your inventory and act as a perfect recipe ingredient.

Sure, champions can make a huge difference, but we’ve found smart item usage to be a more powerful tool in terms of upgrading your team’s overall strength.

It’s impossible to predict what hand you’ll be dealt with when jumping into a match of Teamfight Tactics, but as soon as you’ve got three or four items in your inventory, start thinking about who’ll act as the core of your lineup.

They don’t need to act as the sole carry in your team for the entire duration of a match, but slap a completed item or two on a champion and they can lead you onto a lovely winning streak.

Our Teamfight Tactics: Item guide cheat sheet is a must-read for all your item recipe needs.

Popular Teamfight Tactics coverage:

– How should I spend my gold? –

It’s absolutely vital you don’t go on a mad spending spree at the beginning of each round. Harbouring a healthy economy is the key to reaching the late game and bolstering your composition, even if it means taking a little bit of a hit to your health bar along the way.

As tempting as it might be to splash your cash on new units or experience points, you will gain a certain amount of interest between rounds by holding onto your stash. Interest earned is capped once you hit 50 total gold, so it’s advisable that you don’t go below this threshold if you want to get the most out of your money.

Even if you’ve taken a bit of a hit to the health bar, maintaining a healthy economy can be enough to bring you back into the game. It’ll enable you to reroll the shop’s selection more often, level up faster than your opponents and purchase expensive units without too much hassle.

– How should I position my champions? –

Positioning your champions can make a huge difference. You could have a hyper-carry, tier three Draven, but if you place him out in the open he’ll be picked off in an instant and never have a chance to deal any damage.

First, identify which of your champions are the carries – the ones who’ll be dishing out the damage or using particularly potent spells. Next, protect them. Place some tankier units at the front so they’ll draw aggro away from your more vulnerable champions.

Don’t forget to reposition your champions before creep waves too. Some behave differently to others. In particular, there’s a pack of wolves which will always jump to your backline. To deal with this, position your tanks on the backline instead.

– Should I keep tabs on the competition? –

Yes, absolutely.

Click on the player portraits on the right of your screen to view each players’ team composition. This isn’t something players do enough in our opinion, as it allows you to adapt to your opposition and prevents any element of surprise.

In the late game, keeping an eye on your competition can make a huge difference. Notice that your next opponent is running an Assassin comp? Consider repositioning your team, or rerolling for champions with crowd control abilities.
