Volskaya Industries map guide – Overwatch

Everything you need to know about attacking and defending on Volskaya Industries

Volskaya Industries is an Overwatch map that does away with the fun and sunshine of the game’s many brighter maps, in favour of Blizzard’s bleak and breezy take on Russia. Expect a lot of snow, Red Square architecture and intense firefights in this most open of the game’s dozen or so launch maps.

Our Volskaya Industries guide looks at things largely from the perspective of the attacking team, although defenders can of course use that exact same information entirely to suit their own ends. We think you should be able to connect the dots for yourself when it comes to adapting to whatever your team’s role happens to be in any given match.

Overwatch isn’t even out quite yet and so there’s a huge amount that’s still to be learned when it comes to mastering this map. We will be getting greedily stuck into the game along with everyone else when it comes out, and will be making regularly updates to this map guide. If you’ve uncovered any clever strategies of your own, let us know in the comments so we can all get a little better!

With that out of the way, here’s our round-up of all the advice you should need to make a bigger impact on Volskaya Industries right from your very first match on this map.

BREAKING! – From start and end dates to Skill Rating changes, our Overwatch: Season 3 guide contains everything you need to know about the next period of competitive play!

Volskaya Industries tips

  • The main danger to all emerging attackers lies in the rather handy sniping vantage point provided by the building directly opposite – not good. Not only does this vantage point provide a comprehensive view of every exit point, it also provides a fair amount of cover for snipers to exploit as they juggle picking off enemies with staying alive.
  • You also need to be extremely wary of the dangers presented by the left-hand exit point. That drop might not look too severe, but it does represent an out of bounds area that will lead to instant death. How might this happen? Well, think of any enemy Hero who might be able to pack an explosive punch or knockback that sends you tumbling over the railings. Not a great start…
  • Your hard flanking characters in particular might want to focus on storming down the right-hand exit and travelling through the building interiors. There are many opportunities to dart out and pick off defenders from within this early section, but keep moving as you’ll be focused pretty hard once you’ve given your location up. If you’re playing your role properly, you should be staying agile anyway.
  • Defenders can head upstairs from these buildings for incredible sniping opportunities, and don’t forget to look over at the brick archway with the windows and the sign, just ahead and to the right of the balcony. There’s actually a little hiding-hole that highly agile characters like Widowmaker can reach. This provides extraordinary vision right along the length of the entire map, but it is a very small space – easily targeted – and you run the risk of getting absolutely obliterated if you stick around here too long.
  • If you are playing as Torbjorn or Bastion, that little bunker just ahead of the control point provides an extraordinary vantage point from which to obliterate any enemy Heroes that try to sneak in and begin the capturing process. This is such an obviously amazing place to hunker down in that you should expect to be taken out pretty fast, but Bastion in particular can shove his back into a corner and use his shield to get more work done over a longer period of time.
  • There is an amazing shortcut that the attacking team can use to bypass the worst of this chokepoint madness, but it is much harder for certain Heroes to achieve than others. It’s located towards the left-hand side of the map as you leave the spawn point, and involves traversing the drop in order to reach a platform. Here’s a video below that shows how you can make this leap:
  • Once the first objective is out of the way, you can either use the moving platforms to get into position, travel through the side passages, or just go for a full central assault on the second control point. Note that if you take the third option, a Widowmaker or a Bastion can set themselves up on the platform behind the point and get a really nice line of sight on any attackers taking this very direct approach.
  • Remember that fancy shortcut we mentioned earlier? If you stick to the right-hand side as you progress towards the second and final point, you will eventually see a railed ledge over on the other side of the abyss. If you can get across to this position, you will find it much easier to approach the objective from the rear – and quite possibly catch a defending Hero or two by surprise.
