Destiny 2: Major changes are coming to the Trials PVP mode
A greater focus on eSports?
Big changes are coming to Destiny 2’s Trials PVP mode and we’re going to be “blown away” when they arrive in-game, apparently.
The news was confirmed in an interview with Crucible design lead Lars Bakken, where he was asked directly about Destiny 2’s plans for the Trials mode.
“Trials is different, I am not going to talk too much about any of the nuances of what’s different but it’s coming back and the biggest change is the 4v4 change. Well, there are other changes there too, but I believe people will be blown away when they see the Trials stuff. I wish I could talk about more about it.”
In the original Destiny, players could compete in Trials of Osiris, a 3v3 PVP mode where you’d battle through a series of elimination matches, earning more powerful rewards as you progressed through each stage.
All of Destiny 2’s PVP modes will feature 4v4 matches, so we know that this size limitation applies to the revamped Trials mode. The addition of another player on each team represents a dramatic change in itself, but we’re uncertain as to what other tweaks could be coming to the formula.

One thing that springs to mind when we imagine Bungie tweaking Trials is a greater focus on eSports. Perhaps they’ll place far more emphasis on leaderboards, spectator modes and tournament modes? We’ll have to wait and see.
Trials of Osiris was introduced just after the House of Wolves expansion, the third DLC to be released for Destiny. Thankfully, we won’t have to wait too long until Trials come to the sequel as they’re confirmed to be arriving within the game’s launch window.
