Legends of Runeterra’s full launch and the Rising Tides expansion has arrived, and with it, a host of new features. The ranked mode remains – albeit with a couple of changes. In a similar fashion to League, players will be able to climb ranks from Iron, all the way to Master by winning matches and earning LP.

How does Legends of Runeterra’s Ranked Mode work?

Basics

To put it simply, you will earn LP (League Points) for each win in ranked. Once you reach the amount needed, you’ll advance through the tiers: Iron, Bronze, Silver, Gold, Platinum, Diamond, and Master.

When you first start out, you will need to complete a certain number of placement matches. Depending on how you perform, you’ll be placed in a particular tier.

When you win matches, you gain LP. When you lose matches, you lose LP. However, unlike Hearthstone, you will not drop down a tier. Once you’ve reached a certain tier, you will hold it for the entire season, no matter how much you lose. For example, if you’ve reached Silver and lose game after game, you will never drop back down into Bronze.

At the start of a new season, your rank will reset and you will earn in-game rewards for however high you placed. This means you’ll start every season afresh. Here’s what the ranks reset to at the start of the Season of Plunder:

  • Master accounts dropped 800LP (8 rank divisions).
  • Diamond and Platinum accounts dropped 750LP (7 divisions + 50LP).
  • Gold and Silver accounts dropped 675LP (6 divisions + 75LP).
  • Bronze and Iron accounts reset to Iron IV.
  • Don’t worry about missing the rewards either. When you login for the first time during a new season, you’ll be presented with your rewards straight away. It’s not tucked away inside some horrible menu, so that’s a thumbs up from us.

Finally, it’s worth noting that with patch 0.9.3 Riot adjusted Master Tier MMR rankings. Essentially, it realised losses were far too punishing, so it tightened up things to make them a little less harsh on your rating if you’re up there as a Master rated player.

What rewards are there?

Queueing for ranked matches will earn you a little bit of extra XP compared to normal.

You’ll also earn rewards at the end of each season. Those of you who’ve participated in the beta period will earn a Beta Season exclusive icon based on the highest rank you attained.

The Season of Plunder will last for around 2 months, and awards will be announced closer to the time.
