Togwaggle Druid deck list guide – Rastakhan – Hearthstone (March 2019)

0

Our starter guide for playing Togwaggle Druid in the Rastakhan meta.

Our Togwaggle Druid deck list guide features the best Rastakhan deck list for Season 61 of Hearthstone (April 2019). Our Togwaggle Druid guide also contains Mulligan advice, card combos and strategy tips.

Togwaggle Druid has been doing its thing for quite a long time now, and previously under the name of Mill Druid. All that changed with the release of King Togwaggle himself though, not to mention the powerful Dreampetal Florist. This latter card makes Togwaggle’s win-condition much more consistent, and allows you to make your big play in one go.

One of the priorities of playing this deck is to get your Mana increased as quickly as possible using cards like Nourish and Greedy Sprite. As you do so, you also look to thin your deck rapidly before swapping decks with King Togwaggle. Having made this play, Azalina Soulthief then gives you a copy of King’s Ransom so you can reclaim your deck from the other player.

It’s not a simple deck to play by any means, but we’ve updated our guide with the latest deck list and strategy advice so you can get more out of the archetype. We’ve also got essential Mulligan advice, and provided a closer look at all the card interactions that exist in the deck.

UPDATE – MARCH 2019 #2

As we’re approaching the end of March we wanted to give our Togwaggle Druid guide a quick update to make sure we were highlighting the latest deck list. We’re pretty happy with it as it stands, so keep laddering as you have been!

VIDEO GUIDE – Trump’s Togwaggle Druid deck list is a little out of date at this point, but the video below will give you a great grounding in how to play it in-game. We definitely recommend watching the whole thing if you want to get on top of the archetype quickly.

General Strategy

Togwaggle Druid – or Mill Druid – has a very unique win condition. This deck makes use of King Togwaggle to swap decks with your opponent and then deny them the ability to switch back by following that up with Azalina Soulthief. So, after they use King’s Ransom to take their deck back, you have a copy of the spell yourself to grab it right back and completely disrupt their game plan or leave them to die to fatigue.

You can sometimes execute this combo in a single turn through the use of Twig of the World Tree, though it isn’t a necessary inclusion to achieve success. The deck is full of ramp effects to catapult far ahead of your opponent, along with enough stall and delay to keep you in the game until you find the important combo pieces, too.

Here’s a closer look at the individual stages of your game plan with Togwaggle Druid.

Early game: It’s all about ramp in the early game. Greedy Sprite is the most important card to play in this regards. If you’ve had an unlucky Mulligan then Wrath can remove early threats, or Ferocious Howl can protect your life total while drawing for those useful cards.

Mid game: Continue ramping with Nourish to get you closer to unleashing the deck’s late game combo pieces. You have a solid array of board control option here to keep your opponents in check too. Swipe can be used to clear out a wide board of weaker minions, while Spreading Plague is a very frustrating delay card for almost any deck to deal with easily.

Late game: Here’s where the plan comes together if you have all the pieces ready. It starts with King Togwaggle to swap decks with your opponent, which you’ll immediately want to follow up with Azalina Soulthief so you also gain a copy of Ransom. Now, when your opponent plays the spell to trade decks, you just swap them right back again leaving them with a bunch of unhelpful cards to draw through!

Once this has been set up you can use Naturalize to force your opponent to draw cards and bring them closer to fatigue. Don’t even worry about handing them spells such as Ultimate Infestation – it may seem like a powerful effect to hand over, but them drawing five cards only brings them closer to death. If you’ve reached this point and are still missing key combo pieces, Ultimate Infestation is extremely useful for you though, or you can use Malfurion the Pestilent to delay while you dig for what you need.

Here’s how to handle specific opponent types on the ladder with Togwaggle Druid.

Aggro Opponents

Here are some key tips to keep in mind when against aggro opponents on ladder:

  • 1. Even though you might feel yourself getting overwhelmed early, don’t be scared to take your time ramping up – you have enough catch-up and delay mechanics.
  • 2. Seriously consider holding onto your early game removal and board clear options to prevent them from taking a significant lead.
  • 3. Ferocious Howl and Branching Paths are excellent Armor-gain options to reduce the damage from their early threats.
  • 4. Spreading Plague will completely slow down aggro decks while also infuriating your opponent. See if you can encourage them to go very wide on the board to get the most from it.
  • 5. Arcane Tyrant can make for a high tempo play in the late game to swing a match into your favour.

Control opponents

Some things to consider when facing control opponents:

  • 1. Ramp is even more vital in these matchups so you can get to the combo before your opponent reaches their late game cards.
  • 2. That said, as they’ll start slowly too, you can spend more time building up a massive Armor pool to give you extra late game security.
  • 3. You can also hold off on the combo to ensure Dreampetal Florist hits and execute it in a single turn.
  • 4. You probably won’t get much out of cards like Spreading Plague, so don’t be afraid to use it against smaller boards just to put up a wall between your opponent’s large minions and your life total.
  • 5. Once you reach ten mana, Ultimate Infestation can put you in a big lead against your opponent and fill your hand with the resources you need to get the Togwaggle combo off.

Togwaggle Druid Mulligan guide

Put quite simply, you want to dig for defensive and ramp effects in your opening Mulligan to gain a lead on your opponent and play your expensive combo pieces as soon as possible.

  • 1. Oaken Summons: This card is guaranteed to pull Ironwood Golem or Greedy Sprite out of your deck as it’s the only qualifying minion and a great source of early-game protection.
  • 2. Greedy Sprite: Something to contest the early game board with, and increase your Mana pool.
  • 3. Twig of the World Tree: Having this card in your hand provides you with a small amount of ping damage, and you can also start working towards expending its last charge for the extra Mana when you need it.
  • 4. Wrath: Particularly handy for pinging off aggro minions.

Togwaggle Druid tips, combos and synergies

It pays to spend a bit of time brushing up on the combos that exist within Togwaggle Druid, so we’ve broken down all of the deck synergies and tips you need to be aware of right here:

Lesser Jasper Spellstone starts off as a spell that does two points of damage to a minion. If you can gain three points of Armor though, that increases to four points. Gain another three Armor and the card maxes out at six points of damage.

Ferocious Howl draws you a card and then applies Armor equal to the number of cards in your hand. This has obvious synergy with Lesser Jasper Spellstone.

– You can play your Arcane Tyrant minions for free if you also played a spell that cost five or more Mana on the same turn. Nourish, Spreading Plague and Ultimate Infestation all count in this context.

Ironwood Golem and Greedy Sprite are the only minion in this deck that costs four Mana or less, and so they are the only targets that can be pulled into play by Oaken Summons.

– Cast Spreading Plague and you’ll spawn a 1 / 5 taunt minion. If your opponent still has more minions than you it gets cast again automatically. This process repeats until both sides of the board have an equal number of minions.

Dreampetal Florist reduces the cost of a minion in your hand by seven Mana when played. There’s important synergy here with cards like Azalina Soulthief and King Togwaggle which we’ve outlined below.

– Once you’ve drained your own deck you can use King Togwaggle to steal the opponent’s! By casting Azalina Soulthief you’re able to gain a copy of the King’s Ransom card which stops your opponent getting their deck back.

Card choices and substitutions

There are a handful of essential cards to make Togwaggle Druid work, so substitute options are quite limited. However, there are a couple of options you can consider if you need them.

  • Bloodmage Thalnos: Not vital, but handy for just the card draw or it can be combined with your board clears for even greater effect.
  • Branching Paths: Can be used to draw cards if you’re desperate, but 12 Armor for just four Mana is excellent for stalling.
  • Arcane Tyrant: Makes for a strong tempo play when dropped after one of your more expensive spells. Also works as an alternate target to keep your combo pieces safe from Demonic Project.
  • Azalina Soulthief: A vital part of the deck to give you the King’s Ransom spell too, so you can stop your opponent simply switching back their deck once you’ve dropped Togwaggle.
  • Dreampetal Florist: This new Boomsday card can cut the cost of Azalina Soulthief or King Togwaggle so you can play both parts of the combo during the same turn. Works similarly to Twig of the World Tree if you want to run that instead.
  • Malfurion the Pestilent: Gives you some late game reach with the improved hero power, plus the minions it spawns can serve as further delay to your opponent.
  • King Togwaggle: The card the whole deck is built around, stealing away your opponent’s win condition while also giving them mostly useless cards from your deck.
  • Ultimate Infestation: All-round powerful spell that can help find your combo pieces if you’re still missing them by turn ten. It also works in your favour even if your opponent has one to play against you by bringing them closer to fatigue.
