Beginner Hunter deck list guide – 2017 – Hearthstone

How to play the most common new player Hunter deck in Hearthstone.

Our Beginner Hunter guide for Hearthstone features the best new player deck list, with Mulligan advice, strategy tips, card combos and more.

Our new player Hunter deck list focuses on the Beast class of cards in Hearthstone, and challenges you to take control of the board in the early game before exploiting your card synergies from the mid-stage of the game onwards.

As it only features cards from the Basic set (all of which are unlocked when you hit Level 10 with the Hunter), you shouldn’t expect to make a high climb up the ranked ladder with this deck, but it will give you an excellent grounding in the fundamentals of playing the hero.

We’ve got a deck list for you to get going with here, an overview of the core strategy involved, and a guide to choosing the right cards to keep in the opening (Mulligan) stage of the match. After that we’ve broken down all of the combos you have to play with – take a good look through these before you take this deck to the ladder!

If you’ve any questions about playing the deck just let us know in the comments and we’ll do our best to help you out. Otherwise, check out our main Hearthstone Guide for more essential help with the game.

Beginner Hunter deck list and strategy

Here’s a pretty typical new player Hunter deck list, packed with as much Beast synergy as you can wring out of the Basic set:

2 x Hunter’s Mark 2 x Bloodfen Raptor
2 x Timber Wolf 2 x River Crocolisk
2 x Tracking 2 x Razorfen Hunter
2 x Animal Companion 2 x Oasis Snapjaw
2 x Kill Command
2 x Houndmaster
2 x Multi-Shot
2 x Starving Buzzard
2 x Tundra Rhino

The main objective in the early stage of each match is to maintain board control as best you can, trading minions and attempting to keep a Beast in play at all times, so you can exploit the synergies within this category of card (see the combo section at the bottom of the page for more detail on this front.

If you can reach the mid-game with a Beast in play, Houndmaster can beef it up considerably and hopefully allow you to achieve a dominant position on the board. From here it’s a question of growing your board, making favourable trades wherever possible, and slowly whittling the opponent’s health down at the same time.

On that note, try to work in your Hero Power every turn when you have firm control of the board. This slow but steady damage will put an increasing amount of pressure on your opponent, and may well put them in lethal range of a Kill Command – or two!

As with all starter decks using the Basic set, it’s crucial that you find a way of spending all your Mana efficiently in the first few turns – it’s very hard to catch up with a non-Basic deck otherwise.

High priority keeps are your two-Mana Beast cards like River Crocolisk and Bloodfen Raptor, while Animal Companion and Razorfen Hunter are strong options for Turn 3.

In terms of spells, keeping an Arcane Shot wouldn’t be the end of the world, as it’ll allow you to pick off a minor minion played by the opponent in the very earliest stages of the game.

Beginner Hunter tips, card combos and synergies

As this is a simple deck there aren’t a huge number of combos to consider when playing it out. Still, you’ll definitely gain an advantage by making the following plays second nature!

Hunter’s Mark will all but neutralise a big enemy minion’s health pool, allowing even your humblest of creatures to trade into a higher value target.

– In its vanilla state, Kill Command only does three points of damage. If you have a Beast category of minion out in play though (check the bottom of the card), this damage is increased to five points.

– You can target a friendly Beast minion with Houdmaster to give it an extra two Health and Attack, as well as the Taunt ability. This means your opponent’s minions have to attack that target until it’s removed from the board.

– If you can get Starving Buzzard to stick around on the board long enough, you’ll gain an extra card in your hand for each Beast you summon afterwards.

– Most cards can’t attack on the same turn they’re played, but all Beast minions will be able to attack immediately if Tundra Rhino is out on the board. Note that the Rhino itself can also charge into battle immediately.
