Whether you’re new to Fortnite: Battle Royale or you’re a highly experienced player, you’ve come here for one thing: to improve your end-game ranking and hopefully even take the star prize more often. This guide is based around fundamental tips that’ll drastically increase your chances of winning, regardless of your experience.
We’ve put together a variety of tips that’ll not only help out new players, but also apply to those who’ve been playing Fortnite: Battle Royale for a very long time. It’s an eclectic mix of tips and tricks you might’ve missed, covering habits you need to get into, and crucial mechanics you need to start practicing.

Advanced Tips and Tricks
Rebind your keys (PC)
The act of building structures on PC can be incredibly fiddly. Often we’ve found our fingers desperately scrambling around the keyboard, just trying to locate the function key which corresponds to placing a ramp, for example.
We’ve found rebinding our ‘building options’ keys has made a world of difference to our performance in this area of the game. You can do this by going into the options menu and selecting the ‘Input’ tab. From here, go to ‘Building Options’, select which option you’d like to rebind and press whichever key you’d like to use.
It’s worth remembering that normal walls are already bound to Q, so it’s wise to choose keys that are close to WASD for platforms and ramps. Keys F and V are decent options, as your fingers haven’t got far to travel to tap them both quickly – and it can get pretty frantic in the end-game, as you know.
The new arrangement might seem odd at first, but eventually these key bindings will be so strongly ingrained in your muscle memory that your building speed will be faster than ever before.

Make use of Launch Pads
If you ever get the opportunity to grab a Launch Pad make sure you take it, they could potentially win you the game, or save your bacon – both of which are very good things.
Simply set one down on a flat platform, hop on it and you’ll soar into the skies before deploying your parachute. You can even choose to tuck it away and redploy it quickly for a faster descent and to avoid taking damage from an enemy who knows you’re floating about.
You can use Launch Pads to escape from an encroaching blue zone, quickly engage an enemy squad or retreat from a fight that isn’t going in your favour.
Equip pickaxe for faster looting
This next tip’s nice and simple but it’s a trick many players (including us) hadn’t even considered.
When there’s a large pile of loot on the floor, equip your pickaxe before running over it and interacting with everything. This ensures you’ll hoover up every last piece of ammo without accidentally swapping out any weapons.
Most guns are hitscan-based
In games like PUBG, when you fire an assault rifle or pistol there’s an element of ‘bullet travel’ or ‘bullet drop’. In that game you’ll deliberately fire your shot above an enemy’s head, as the bullet has a fair distance to travel. By the time it reaches the target, it will have dropped just enough to pierce their cranium. Hopefully…
In Fortnite: Battle Royale, the only guns affected by bullet drop are sniper rifles. Otherwise, every other weapon is hitscan which means that your bullets will hit targets instantaneously. There’s no need to shoot above or in front of enemies at a distance if you’re wielding anything other than a sniper.
It’s surprising how many players don’t know this fact, so just make sure you’re aiming directly at your target if you’ve got a rifle in your hands!

Don’t neglect ammo crates
It’s amazing how many ammunition crates are left unopened in the average match. Try and avoid waltzing past them or assuming that they aren’t worth your time – they’re always worth looting.
Stocking up on ammo is not only important for taking down your enemies, but also for destroying structures. Remember, take the time to crack them open!
Mark supply crates
Occasionally, special crates containing powerful loot, armour and healing items will descend from the sky. You can actually keep track of their position by shooting them as it’ll display their health bar.
Counter plays
Whenever you’re engaged in a duel with another player, think of each of your moves as counter strategies to your opponent’s. If they build up and over you, build a roof and a doorway outside to reset the fight. If they’ve built a ramp up to your fort, start building upwards and over them.
This is by no means easy to get used to, but keep this in mind whenever you’re playing the game. It’ll teach you to be level-headed and think tactically, rather than relying purely on aim and luck. Soon enough you’ll become faster at not only building, but also building with purpose.
Get into this ‘counter-play’ mindset and you’ll be a force to be reckoned with in no time.
Know structure values
When you’re building walls or quick structures in a pinch, wood is your go-to material. On paper, brick and metal should be stronger, but this isn’t the case when you need a short-term defensive solution.
When you erect a wooden wall, it can tank a couple of Pump Shotgun shells at close range before crumbling. On the other hand, brick and metal shatter in only one shell. It’s a little counter-intuitive, but it’s worth remembering for those frantic close-quarters fights.

Try dual weapons
Equipping two of the same weapon – notably the Pump Shotgun or Bolt-Action Sniper Rifle, can turn experienced players into killing machines. The thinking behind this essentially boils down to eliminating the delay when reloading. Once you’ve fired off one shot, you’ll immediately switch out to the other and fire again.
