Hearthstone’s new expansion is Ashes of Outland – Demon Hunter introduced

Outlandish stuff.

The Year of the Phoenix has brought about Ashes of Outland, giving us an entirely new class to play with – Demon Hunter. Here’s all you need to know.

Ashes of Outland takes place in Illidan Stormrage’s regular haunt, Outland. If you remember 2007 World of Warcraft, you’ll be familiar with The Burning Crusade. Well, get ready to jump back into that world. Illidan even has his own brand new class – Demon Hunter.

Hearthstone’s new expansion is Ashes of Outland – Demon Hunter introduced

Ashes of Outland’s primary pull is of course the Demon Hunter class. This is the very first time since Hearthstone’s inception we’re seeing a new class, and it’s a pretty exciting proposition. According to designer Alec Dawson, ‘the timing felt really right’ to add in Demon Hunter. They’d been talking about it for a while, and because Illidan means so much to so many WoW fans, he was an obvious choice (not to mention the Illidan Stormrage card is sort of rubbish).

We’ve got all the information you need about the new class over on our Demon Hunter page, so give that a look for a more in-depth look.

When does Ashes of Outland release?

The new Hearthstone expansion, Ashes of Outland, is set for release on April 7th 2020. Usually, the specific time of release is 6pm GMT (2pm EST, 11am PST), but we’ll keep you updated if this changes.

Improvements for Ranked mode

The way Hearthstone’s Ranked mode is set up will be changing in the Year of the Phoenix. We’ve got a whole page explaining the Hearthstone Ranked changes if you’re interested.

New ‘Prime’ Minions unveiled

We’ll try to avoid any obvious Transformers references for this bit. Basically, new Legendary minions are coming for each class, and when they die, they transform into powerful ‘Prime’ versions of themselves. Kargath Bladefist, for example, is a 4 mana 4/4 with Rush. Not awful, but nothing special. When he dies off though? You’ll shuffle a copy of Kargath Prime into your deck, an 8 mana 10/10 with Rush who gives you 10 Armor if you attack and kill a minion with it.

They get pretty nutty, and we’re excited to see how various classes with duplicating Deathrattles, cloning, and resurrection effects can take advantage of these massive upgraded forms.

Imprisoned Demons

We’ve seen minions go ‘dormant’ before. Well, with Ashes of Outland, Imprisoned Demons are bringing in this effect. These guys are unable to do anything or be interacted with for 2 turns before they break out of their prisons and unleash a powerful effect on the board.

The Mage class, for example, gets the Imprisoned Observer. This thing is a 3 mana 4/5, which is pretty spicy in itself. The big deal comes when this gross, tentacled monstrosity awakens. It deals 2 damage to all enemy minions. Of course, your opponent can prepare for this, but it’s also possible to stop token-based decks from developing any kind of board at all with this guy. They won’t want to play minions into a board of certain death, obviously.

It looks like these demons will mostly have a pretty solid power level. Imprisoned Satyr is another one, and leans into the Druid class’ ramp and mana discount ability, reducing a friendly minion’s cost by a whopping 5. This minion only costs 3 mana itself, so you could be getting a massive amount of value when the effect finally goes off.

We’ve got all kinds of Ashes of Outland content ready to go as well, so check out our Demon Hunter guide, as well as our rundown of all the new content available for returning players.
