PAX East 2020 is hosting an APEX Legends Duos tournament with a $10,000 prize pool. Here’s everything you need to know about the tournament, including how to register, how it works, and more.
This year, Almost Pro at PAX Arena is playing host to an APEX Legends Duos tournament. It’s open to all PAX East attendees (age 13+) with a whopping $10,000 prize pool at stake, so if you reckon you can outlast the competition, why not enter?
If you’re at PAX East 2020, you’ll be able to easily register onsite and participate in qualifiers which will take place on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, so there’s plenty of opportunity to get involved. The grand finals will take place on Sunday, where all the action will be livestreamed on Twitch, Mixer, and Facebook with casters Lawler, GlitterXplosion, and Fickle Platypus highlighting all the best action.

How does the PAX Arena: Almost Pro – APEX Legends Duos tournament work?

How do I register?
Registration is available onsite daily, so simply head on over to the PAX Arena registration table to sign up for a qualifier.
Registration Schedule:
- Thursday February 27th: 10:00 – 18:00 Open Registration
- Friday February 28th: 10:00 – 18:00 Open Registration
- Saturday February 29th: 10:00 – 18:00 Open Registration
- Sunday March 1st: 10:00 – 10:45 Last Chance Registration
There are a few things to take note of, though, so give this a quick read before going ahead:
You MUST have a PAX East badge to enter. All PAX attendees that are 13+ in age qualify to participate. If you are under the age of 18, you will need to bring your PAX badge, your ID, and your parent/guardian to register.
What’s the tournament format?
Here’s a quick look at the tournament format:
- Game Title: Apex Legends
- Game Mode: Duos (2 players)
- Lobby Player Limit: 30 teams, 60 players.
What’s the tournament schedule?
- 11:00 – 14:00 – Qualifier 1 Friday February 28th
- 14:00 – 17:00 – Qualifier 2 Saturday February 29th
- 14:00 – 17:00 – Qualifier 3 Sunday March 1st
- 11:00 – 14:00 – Qualifier 4 Sunday March 1st
- 14:00 – 17:30 – Finals Sunday March 1st
How does scoring work?
At the end of each match, teams are awarded points for their placement and the team’s total number of kills (“Match Score”) as shown on the in-game end of match summary screen. The points awarded in each match are:
- 1st: 12
- 2nd: 9
- 3rd: 7
- 4th: 5
- 5th: 4
- 6th – 7th: 3
- 8th – 10th: 2
- 11th – 15th: 1
- 16th – 30th: 0
Players will also earn 1 point per kill.
Each qualifier will consist of 3 games of Apex Legends. Combined score totals of all 3 games will determine your placement.
For qualifiers 1, 2 and 3, the top 8 teams as determined by final placement will advance to Sunday’s Final. For qualifier 4, the top 6 teams, as determined by final placement will advance to Sunday’s Final.
The Final will be 4 games and final placements will be determined by combined scores across all 4 of these games.
Tiebreakers occur if 2 or more teams end a round with the same number of points. If this happens, tiebreakers will be applied in the order below. When a tiebreaker has determined 1 team as having placed higher than the others, the tiebreakers will be applied from the first again for any remaining tied players.

- 3. Best non-Champion placement in the round
- 4. Lowest average placement
- 5. Highest average kills for the team
- 6. Most eliminations by the team in a single game
- 7. Most eliminations by a single player in the round

How much prize money is up for grabs?
The champions will receive a hefty $3,000 pay packet, and there’s plenty more to go around. Here’s a look at the prize structure:

Are there any player requirements?
Player Requirements
We’ve listed a few in the registration section, but here’s an in-depth look at what you’ll need to enter.
- Players must be at least 13 years of age or older on February 27th 2020.
- Players under the age of 18 must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian.
- Registration is open to U.S. residents as well as international attendees.
- Players may use their own Apex Legends account but will be responsible for signing-in in a timely manner.
- Players must have PAX East 2020 badges for the day of their qualifier and Sunday, or a 4 day badge.
- Players (or their parent or guardian) must have proof of age, residence, and PAX badges when registering.
- All registration will be held on site at the PAX Arena registration table. Players cannot register online.
What are the General Rules?
This all might seem a bit exhaustive, but if you’re serious about competing we’d highly recommend giving it a quick scan.
Gameplay Settings
- All settings in each Match will be the default settings of a Ranked Leagues match of Apex Legends.
General Rules
- Competitors may not stream their matches in any way. IRL streaming is likewise not allowed during tournament play.
- Competitors may not quit out of a Match before it has ended.
- Competitors may not intentionally delay the start of a Match.
- Competitors may not use any game-changing scripts.
- Competitors may not exploit a game mechanic to enter and exit the 30-second “out-of-bounds” kill timer.
- Examples of this include repeatedly using a zipline, grapple, portal, balloon, or other character ability to repeatedly enter the same area that activates the “out-of-bounds” timer.
- Competitors may not intentionally exploit one-sided textures on map geometry to block or avoid any incoming damage that would have otherwise connected without the exploited geometry.
- Competitors may not hide inside of map geometry.
- Competitors may not intentionally hide behind invisible walls on the map.
- Competitors may not fire their weapon while in the Downed state.
- Competitors may not fire their weapon while reviving another player.
Competitors may not exploit a Legend’s ability in order to gain an unintended competitive advantage. Examples of these exploits include:
- Using Mirage’s Vanishing Act to enter the Downed state with the ability to fire a weapon.
- Using Wraith’s Dimensional Rift & Void in combination to reduce the cooldown of Void after respawned.
- Using Wraith’s Dimensional Rift to portal inside map geometry.
- Using any exploit, bug, and/or glitch to reduce the cooldown on a Legend’s ultimate or tactical abilities.
Competitors may not exploit Weapon Inspect or Reload glitches in order to increase a weapon’s rate of fire. Examples of this rule are:
- Using the Weapon Inspect feature to cancel weapon animations.
- Starting a weapon reload and quickly swapping weapons back to the original weapon.
- Competitors may not intentionally melee loot bins, supply drops, and/or respawn beacons in an effort to launch themselves or other players into the air.
- Competitors are responsible for their equipment throughout the tournament.
