How to get your first look at Fortnite: Battle Royale on mobile devices.

This page contains everything you need to know about the sign up process on both iOS and Android, as well as tips, tricks and strategy advice to help you get started with Fortnite Mobile.

As if owning every ounce of gamer attention on PCs, Playstation 4s and Xbox Ones on a global basis wasn’t quite enough, Epic Games hasn’t wasted any time making a push into the mobile market using its colossally successful game Fornite: Battle Royale.

What exactly should you expect when you manage to install the game onto your mobile device though? The good news is that you get absolutely everything you’ve been enjoying on traditional platforms already. You’re still battling 99 other players for dominance of the map, that map is identical in every way to the one found on the other platforms, and you get the same juicy updates every week to boot. You can even play against friends on other platforms if you wish.

This all begs the question of how exactly you sign up for Fortnite on iOS and Android, then get the game on your system so you can enjoy Fortnite on the go for yourself. To help you get started, we’ve got a complete breakdown of what you need to do to sign up, then get the client installed on your phone. We’ll keep updating it over time, as new information on the Android release date becomes available.

On top of all this, we’ve put together a handful of essential tips and tricks to getting a one-up over the competition on Fortnite Mobile so you can start bagging those Victory Royales wherever you might be – bus, train or even just walking about town.

When you’re done here, why not check out our Season 4 guide? It’s crammed with all the information you need on what’s new in Fortnite, as well as how to complete each week’s challenges!

UPDATE: Fortnite Android may not be on Google Play Store

Fortnite’s arrival on Android has been a long time coming, especially as it’s been out on iOS for several months now.

Naturally you’d expect any major Android game release to end up on the Google Play Store, but according to a leak by xda-developers.com this may not be the case at all.

There are two images, one which says that you’ll be “prompted with security permissions” after you’ve downloaded the game, and another which says that “This is necessary to install any app outside of the Play Store”.

Those over at xda-developers.com suggest that Fortnite Android will in fact launch as a 30-day exclusive for the Samsung Galaxy Note 9 smartphone from the 24th August. Fortnite will then launch on all other Android smartphones on the 23rd September.

For now we’ll have to wait and see, but it’s not devastating news. All Android users will be getting Fortnite Mobile one way or another!

How to sign-up for Battle Royale on iOS and Android

The sign-up process is actually pretty simple and we’ve outlined it below:

  • As of now, you simply need to head to www.Fortnite.com and look for the sign-up button for the Invite Event on iOS.
  • Once you’ve done so, you’ll join a list of applicants that Epic will contact in time.
  • When you hear from Epic, the publisher will provide you with a link that will allow you to download the mobile client from the App Store.
  • You may not be invited immediately as Epic will gradually bring people in. Be wary of following any links that don’t come directly from Epic.
  • Those who receive invites will also get additional invite codes that can be shared with friends.
  • In order to actually play Battle Royale on mobiles, you’ll need an internet connection, as well as iOS11 on either an iPhone 6S/SE and up, iPad Mini 4, iPad Pro, iPad Air 2 or an iPad 2017.
  • Although the game will be coming to Android devices, Epic has not yet confirmed the sign-up process for this platform. We’ll update this article as soon as we know more.

Fortnite Mobile: Useful Features

Here’s a few handy features that’ll help up your game.

Customise your HUD

  • Head into the main menu lobby screen.
  • To the top right of your screen, open up the settings menu.
  • Select the “HUD Layout Tool”.
  • You’ll be taken to a screen which’ll allow you to highlight all the control buttons and let you place them anywhere.
  • You can even change the size of the icons, as well as tweak “Build Mode” controls too.
  • You can disable buttons you don’t use much by swiping them off the screen.

Enable Voice Chat

  • Sign up for a Microsoft Account.
  • Get the Xbox App. It’s got a party chat function that you can use to talk to friends on mobile while playing on your iPhone or iPad.
  • Open up the app and tap the icon along the top bar that shows three people. This’ll start a part with your friends.
  • Select your friends and invite them into the party.
  • Now you will be able to chat with your friends while playing Fortnite Mobile!

Fortnite Mobile: Tips and Tricks to help you get started

Below we’ve put together a few tidbits of strategy advice to help you master Fortnite on your mobile device.

Get used to the control scheme

First things first, you’ll want to acclimitise to a significantly more compact control scheme than you’d find on a traditional controller, and one that’s worlds away from the freedom of a keyboard and mouse combo.

Thankfully it’s all fairly intuitive when it comes to shooting and looting, but Fortnite’s building mechanics can really throw a spanner in the works. You’ll have to press a specific build button, which’ll then bring up an entirely different UI from which you can create ramps, platforms and the like.

We’d recommend using the pre-game lobby to practise moving about, jumping and cycling between the two user interfaces. Messing about with your camera settings will also be worth while, as it’ll enable you to find a nice middle ground for your character’s movement and positioning when swiping across the screen.

Naturally though, the more you play the better you’ll get. Keep at it!

Use the auto-run feature

As a Battle Royale game, Fornite’s all about outlasting the competition. It’s not enough to watch your back, you want to be watching absolutely everything – you never know where and when a threat will present itself. Trouble is, you can’t cower in a bush the entire game as you’ve got to keep within the Storm as it constricts, bringing you ever-closer to your foes.

On both consoles and PCs, you can either swing your mouse or wrench your joystick in order to get a quick survey of the area. With Fortnite Mobile moving the camera is a little more cumbersome, as it’s solely reliant on finger swipes which aren’t any near as efficient in most cases.

Thankfully Epic Games has us covered with an “auto-run” feature that’s no available on any other platforms. Double-tap the control stick on the left side of the screen and it’ll make your character run in direction they’re facing, allowing you to scan the area for any enemies while still jogging towards your end goal.

Remember to ADS

You absolutely don’t want to be firing from the hip at mid to long range when you’ve got a rifle in hand. It’ll be far too inaccurate and it’s unlikely you’ll hit your target at all.

That’s why it’s crucial that you tap the crosshair icon just to the left of crouch when you spot an enemy out in the distance. The camera will zoom in for an over the shoulder view, and the crosshair will tighten. This allows for a far more measured approach which will give you the extra accuracy you need to land those sweet headshots.

Turn on “Tap to Search/Interact” in the options menu

Automatically grabbing items as you run over them may seem like a nice touch for Fortnite Mobile, but after a few matches you’ll soon realise it’s more of a hindrance than a help. Your inventory just gets clogged with tonnes of nuisance items that you don’t need – inventory manage is important folks.

That’s why it’s best to turn this auto-pickup feature off. To do so, head into the Settings menu and turn on the “Tap to Search/Interact” option. This means you’ll have to tap the screen to interact with loot and throw it into your backpack, but it’s well worth the effort if it means a tidier, less clogged inventory.

Use headphones

If you don’t own a pair, we’d recommend getting hold of some. They’ll cut out background noise and enable you to hear some subtle audio cues which you almost certainly wouldn’t have heard if you were just relying on your devices in-built speakers.

You’ll be able to hear footsteps and the tinkle of golden chests, as well as get you more immersed in the whole Battle Royale experience. If anything, you can use the same headphones to listen to music or watch silly Youtube videos as well – more bang for your V-Buck.

That’s the end of the third iteration of our Fortnite Mobile guide, but we’ll be updating this page further once more information on the Android version comes to light – stay tuned on that front!
