An interview with Hearthstone’s Esports lead Che Chou has just been published on the game’s official blog.
Chou and his team work on the Hearthstone Championship Tour (HCT) and Hearthstone Global Games (HGG) events, and the interview goes into a little detail about what goes into making these tournaments a success.

- There are ten people working with Chou on the Hearthstone Esports team. If you fancy joining them, they’re hiring for 2018!
- Allowing players to ban heroes in match-ups has made the game more balanced and competitive. It’s also more enjoyable for the viewers as there’s greater class representation.
- Deck lists are made public prior to tournaments to allow participants to plan better and calculate percentages. This puts the focus on skill rather than pure entertainment.
- Offline, face-to-face, organised social play is very important for the future of Hearthstone as an Esport, and Chou wants to see greater investment in the Hearthstone Championship Tour (HCT) Major circuit.
It’s taken a little while for Hearthstone’s esports scene to get off the ground, and a number of different formats have been explored for the game’s official tournaments over the years. Things have improved a great deal over the last 12 months, however, with a number of popular professional and public-access tournaments becoming firmly established.
