Everything you need to know about the next Hearthstone expansion.
Blizzard has just announced the third expansion for Hearthstone, named Whispers of the Old Gods. That’s a surprisingly annoying phrase to type out, and so we’re going with the acronym of WOTOG for the rest of this article, and perhaps the rest of time.
If you’ve just picked up on this exciting news, you’ve no doubt got plenty of questions about what the new content is all about. For that reason, we’ve put together a complete FAQ that we think should answer just about anything you could possibly want to know at this stage.
Ask in the comments if there’s anything you’re unsure of, and we’ll do our best to get you up to speed.
What’s the theme of the next expansion?
WOTOG is themed around the most ancient entities of the Warcraft universe. Here’s what Blizzard has to say on the theme:
“Ancient evil rises, and a window to an alternate reality has been opened. Here, the Old Gods’ grasp has corrupted Azeroth, plunging the tavern into madness in Hearthstone’s newest expansion…Far beneath the surface of Azeroth, an incredible darkness stirs, granting all tavern-goers a taste of its tainted strength.”
How many cards will the new expansion add to Hearthstone?
There are 134 new cards coming to the game in total. You’ll find four of Warcraft’s Old Gods in the set: C’Thun, Y’Shaarj, Yogg-Saron and N’Zoth. Expect a number of the cards in WOTOG to feed these fearsome entities with extra power.
Will we get any free cards or decks when the next expansion arrives?
Yes! You’ll receive three WOTOG packs if you log in to the game during a specific promotional window that’s yet to be announced. You’ll also receive two bonus cards when you open your very first pack: C’Thun and his servant Beckoner of Evil. You can see how both of these cards interact with each other below:
How will WOTOG affect the Arena?
Just like last year’s Grand Tournament expansion, WOTOG cards will be added to the overall Arena card pool at launch.
You’ll also be able to win WOTOG card packs from your Arena runs, although Blizzard has yet to confirm whether you’ll be guaranteed a pack from this new expansion – as used to be the case – or simply have a random chance at receive a pack from the latest set (as things currently are).
Is there a pre-order bonus for Whispers of the Old Gods?
Yes. Just like the previous expansion you’ll soon be able to pre-order a bundle of 50 packs at a reduced rate of $49.99 in total. Not only that but you’ll also get a specially-themed card back for participating in this promotion.
When is the new content being released?
There’s no specific date pinned down for the release of the next expansion, but Blizzard has confirmed it will arrive at some point late April / early May this year.
Is there an announcement trailer I can watch?
Yes! You can view the big reveal cinematic for the expansion below – personally we think it’s the best one so far.
