Deep and Toss are both new keywords for the Season of Plunder and Rising Tides expansion. They synergise together nicely – you’re looking to control the board and get your deck nice and small to gain Deep bonuses and destroy your enemy with overwhelming force.
Toss gets rid of cards from the bottom of your deck, whilst Deep buffs the unit it’s attached to if you have had 15 or fewer cards left. This does mean if you manage to shuffle more, you’ll keep the bonus.

General strategy
Once you get to the late game with this deck, you’re in a ridiculously good place. It takes skill and patience to reach that point though, so read on to find out about that.
Early game: You’ll want to hard-mulligan for your small minions and cheap cards. Play Dreg Dredgers, Barkbeast, and Thorny Toad to get yourself on board nice and early, and block incoming enemy attacks with your cheap bois. This’ll start your Toss mechanic too, getting you closer to being Deep and upgrading your Champions.
Mid Game: As you continue Tossing cards from your deck, remember to prioritise survival. If you can get away with playing a copy of Lure of the Depths, it’s well worth doing so as you’ll be able to discount your Sea Monster units for the future. Also, you’d be surprised with how strong Jaull Hunters can be in the mid-game. Dealing 4 damage to an enemy unit for 3 mana is great, and it’ll even generate some useful value for later on. Of course, you can play some Sea Monster units before you’re Deep, as the likes of The Beast Below often represent decent tempo for board contesting, and Devourer of the Depths represents really strong removal even without a buffed statline.
Getting your Maokai on the board isn’t too bad either – you’ll accellerate the tossing of your cards as well as getting some temporary board presence with your Saplings.
Late Game: Now is the time your Champions should be beginning to upgrade. Nautilus shuffles a bunch of Sea Monsters back into your deck so you can go into the long game, as well as being a 13/13 with Tough and Fearsome (and discounting your Sea Monsters even further). Maokai, when levelled up and played, destroys almost the entire enemy deck. Pretty ridiculous.
In the meantime, you have some ridiculous finishers aside from your Champions – not least Shipwreck Hoarder. It tosses 2 and shuffles 2 Treasures into your deck. These treasures get put into your hand when Tossed, and have some ridiculously powerful effects. Keelbreaker deals 5 to all minions in play, Platewyrm Egg summons 3 5/5s with Deep (making them 8/8s if you’ve Tossed enough), and Treasure Trove adds 5 Fleeting 0 cost cards to your hand. Treasures can really swing a game if you’re in desperate times, so make sure you don’t ignore them.

Deep Toss Control Mulligan guide
These are the cards you’ll want to make the best possible start with Deep Toss Control:
- 1. Dreg Dredgers gets you started with a nice 1 mana statline combined with getting your Toss effect going.
- 2. Barkbeast is essentially a 1 mana 3/3, but the boost is delayed until another friendly unit dies.
- 3. Thorny Toad is a solid 2 mana 1/4, offering decent board presence early for trades and blocking, as well as healing your Nexus and keeping you going with card Tossing.
Deep Toss Control tips, combos and synergies
Here’s an overview of the synergies to look out for in this Deep Toss Control deck. Keep an eye out for more once the metagame has time to grow.
– If you upgrade Maokai, he’ll completely destroy the enemy deck except for 4 cards. This means you’ll be able to win in a few turns even if you don’t kill them outright.
– Playing Nautilus can boost your deck big time – after being Deep, you can put your more expensive allies back into your deck, and when an upgraded Nautilus is in play he discounts your Sea Monster allies by 4 mana. This includes the likes of Shipwreck Hoarder, Devourer of the Depths, and Abyssal Eye.
– When you’re Deep, Devourer of the Depths will be able to destroy a minion with 6 Health or less when played.
– Shipwreck Hoarder shuffles 2 Treasures into your deck. These are powerful 5-cost spells which are always drawn instead of Tossed.
– Using the likes of Sap Magic mid-combat can help Deep allies survive. Play the spell, and since it has Burst, the 3 it tosses could buff up your Deep units by +3/+3.
– If your deck has 15 or fewer cards left, your Deep units get +3/+3. This upgrade can happen whether the units are on board, in hand, or in your deck. You can also shuffle more cards into your deck with the likes of Nautilus, and retain the Deep bonus if you at one point had 15 or fewer cards.
– Salvage gets you 4 cards closer to being Deep thanks to its Toss 2 and Draw 2. Keep this in mind, especially during combat rounds.
