Warmama, just killed a man.

Our Warmother Control deck list guide features the best Warmother Control deck for the open beta season of Legends of Runeterra (March 2020). Our Warmother Control deck guide contains Mulligan advice, card combos and strategy tips.

If you’re looking for a rundown of the best decks Legends of Runeterra has to offer, check out our Legends of Runeterra Best Decks page!

Warmother Control is based on the Freljord spell, Warmother’s Call. If you like long, grindy games of Legends of Runeterra, this might just be the deck for you. Your opponents might hate it, but we’d be lying if we said it wasn’t massively satisfying slamming down massive unit after massive unit until your enemy can’t go on.

Of course, this all comes at a cost. To put it bluntly, your early game is absolute rubbish. Regardless, you’ll often be able to find a way, particularly since you’re looking to ramp things up with this deck list.

Here’s the best Warmother Control deck at the moment, and you’ll find some tips and tricks below it.

Freljord Shadow Isles
3 x Icevale Archer 3 x Vile Feast
3 x Avalanche 3 x Grasp of the Undying
3 x Avarosan Hearthguard 3 x Withering Wail
3 x Catalyst of Aeons 1 x Atrocity
3 x Anivia 3 x Soulgorger
3 x Tryndamere 3 x Vengeance
1 x She Who Wanders 3 x The Ruination
2 x Warmother’s Call

General Strategy

You’re trying to ramp up and survive if at all possible. Aggressive decks will try to take you out before your value arrives, whilst other control decks will give you an easier time early on.

Early Game: Your cheapest cards are Vile Feast and Icevale Archer, and you’ll need them against aggro. Vile Feast is especially strong against units with 1 health, as you’ll be able to kill a unit, heal your Nexus for 1, and block with a 1/1 Spiderling all with a single card.

Spell Mana is useful at this point too. 5 mana for Grasp of the Undying or Withering Wail – vital removal spells – might seem like a lot, but they can be cast as early as turn 3. Avalanche is your most important tool in most cases though – try to get the maximum possible value from it by waiting for your foe to put more units on the board and kill them.

Mid Game: Catalyst of Aeons is your source of ramp in this deck, and if you can find the opportunity to play it, absolutely go for it. Healing 3 to your Nexus is nice, but you’re really here for the extra mana gem generated – it’ll get you to your massive plays much faster.

Start plonking down units too if at all possible. Soulgorger has a big health total and Lifesteal, making it a great irritant for enemy units to get through, and Avarosan Hearthguard buffs every unit in your deck when summoned, giving you massive value throughout the whole rest of the game.

The sooner you can regain control of the board, the sooner you’ll be securing the win. Grasp of the Undying, Atrocity, Avalanche – whatever you can use to get rid of your opponent’s units, don’t be afraid to throw it out there.

Late Game: By this point in the game, you should be finally getting into your stride. Warmother’s Call is ludicrously powerful, as it’ll summon an entire unit from your deck upon casting and every single turn for the rest of the game. That means free Anivias, piles of Tryndameres and mountains of buffed-up Soulgorgers. She Who Wanders is another great option – your single copy of this behemoth can kill off every unit on your opponent’s board and in their hand if things line up right. It’ll even leave you with a chunky 10/10 (or more if you’ve buffed it)! Thanks to the Shadow Isles’ ridiculous power of removal, this deck is a late-game powerhouse, and once you get a few copies of Tryndamere onto your side of the board, you should be able to push that final bit of damage.

These are the cards you’ll want to hold on to at the start of a match to stay on curve:

  • 1. Vile Feast, as mentioned, is a great card to protect yourself early on. It’s a bit of healing, removal, and board presence, all for just 2 mana.
  • 2. Yes, it’s 5 mana, but Catalyst of Aeons is an absolute banger if you find yourself able to play it. You’ll get closer to Anivia’s Enlightened upgrade, the chance to cast Warmother’s Call, and generally have more options in this expensive deck.
  • 3. Avalanche costs 4 mana to deal 2 to all units. Early on in the game, this can save your skin against aggression, particularly wide boards.
  • 4. Icevale Archer is great against tall boards rather than wide. For 1 turn, you can stifle a big unit from dealing damage to you, giving you that little bit more time to stabilise. You’ll even get a 3/1 unit to boot.

Warmother Control tips, combos and synergies

Below we’ve put together a handful of tips to help you pilot this deck effectively. As the meta develops, we’ll keep things updated, so stay tuned for all the latest!

– You’ve got a lot of healing available here. Catalyst of Aeons, Grasp of the Undying, Withering Wail, and Soulgorger all give you health back along with their other effects, and you’ll sorely need this with the atrocious early game at your disposal.

– Do anything it takes to survive the early game. This might mean making poor-value trades, chucking loads of direct damage spells at your foes quickly, and even sacrificing your own health in preparation for a larger board clear later.

– Don’t worry about playing The Ruination – if you can get a few enemies killed by it, it’s absolutely worth it.

Soulgorger has Lifesteal, meaning you can regain health based on the damage it deals. Buff it with Avarosan Hearthguard, and you’ll heal even more.

She Who Wanders won’t trigger her effect if you summon her through Warmother’s Call. It only works if you play her from hand, and even then your foe can react and cast Deny.

– You can’t play multiple copies of your Champions from hand (Anivia and Tryndamere), as they’ll transform into their corresponding spells. However, with Warmother’s Call, you can get a bunch of copies directly from your deck.
